Rest assured The Danish Girl, directed by Oscar-winner Tom Hooper, will add momentum to this important conversation around ‘trans’ identity. The film, after all, is based on the true story of Danish landscape painter Einar Wegener, the first person to undergo gender reassignment surgery.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for The Danish Girl. The incredible performances alone demand that you make time for this film.

The Danish Girl is the kind of film that leaves by an unsettling feeling. It is almost like the world hasn't evolved since 1926, considering we are still discussing Caityln Jenner's highly publicized sex-change surgery and article 377's relevance in the Indian scenario. How Lili evolves from a clumsy, shy woman into a go-getter is overwhelming. You wish the film was less conventional in its approach, but it delivers so much that you can barely complain.

There was less conflict between the two of them, in the bohemian world they came to inhabit in Paris art world, as within Lili herself. At the same time, the Gerda-Lili parts are the best portions of the film, including her initial sexual excitement at finding her husband dressed in her night-dress. She died penniless (a fact brushed out of the film); he died to become the face of the transgender movement. Vikander demands a Gerda story.

A biopic adapted from David Ebershoff's book of the same name, on the exploration of self and sexuality by Danish artist Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) who eventually underwent the world's first gender reassignment surgery in the early 1900s, while in a strongly bonded marriage to Gerda (Alicia Vikander), an equally talented portrait artist, this film is a winner all the way through.

Like Lili’s degrading health that makes her paler by the day, the film feels a little bloodless. That way, Vikander gets the more remarkable part of a woman who deeply misses her husband and yet remains rock-solid in her support for him embracing his sexuality. She plays an instrumental role in his sex- reassignment surgery, considered one of the first in Queer history. The fact that Gerda invokes more sympathy in us than Lili says a lot about Vikander's performance.

If you’re looking for a completely accurate retelling of Lili Elbe’s story, you might find yourself a little disappointed. The Danish Girl takes liberties with the true story, and some of the finer aspects are lost in the translation to the screen. Still, the film is a stellar addition to the filmographies of everyone involved, and is definitely worth watching. The Danish Girl is the sympathetic retelling of a transgendered woman’s journey. The film features noteworthy performances, breathtaking visuals and an outstanding soundtrack, making it the perfect film to watch this weekend.
