There is no question Neerja will leave you with a lump the size of a golf-ball in your throat. Based on the tragic true story of 23-year-old airhostess Neerja Bhanot, who lost her life helping passengers escape from Palestinian terrorists on a hijacked Pan Am flight in 1986, this is a respectful tribute that pushes all the right buttons.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for Neerja. Don’t forget to carry a handkerchief; you’re going to need one.

It's time to acknowledge and salute our heroes. And Neerja does that magnificently. A film that deserves a standing ovation...Neerja is a must, must watch. A film that will continue to live in our memory. Will go with a 4.5 star rating for this cinematic gem! Neerja is inspirational, moving, powerful, heartbreaking. Director Ram Madhvani narrates the story with panache. Screenwriting is top notch

On the whole, Neerja is a surefire hit. It is a human drama which will move the audience to tears a number of times. Because the story is not too well-known, the curiosity value of the film will be immense, more so because it presents a realistic account of what happened in the hijack drama of 1986. The film may have started slow but there can be no two opinions about the prediction that the film has wings to take flight and its collections will shoot up on the strength of a hugely positive word of mouth.

Madhvani's biggest strength in Neerja may be the way he alternates between letting us relate to the character and making us feel awed by her. She's just like you or me or someone we know, the film seems to assure us, before showing us just how special she is -- and how special we must all hope to be. Many salutations, Neerja Bhanot, and may your story live on.

Neerja isn't always subtle in its sentimentality what with its moments of a mother (a poignant if mannered Shabana Azmi) instinctively sensing trouble or compulsively scouting for a misplaced good luck charm. And yet so heartfelt in its sympathy, I couldn't fight those tears when her father (a terrific Yogendra Tiku) stumbles for words to comfort his wife on the phone. He is not sure if he has reason to. But he found much to be proud of a daughter who wasn't merely swayed by the romanticism of Anand, but truly understood the cost at which such philosophy is procured.

Sonam is of course the lynchpin. Even when pushed well out of her comfort zone, she is completely convincing and real as the bubbly youngster with nerves of steel. Shabana Azmi informs her role with subtle nuances that add startling layers to the characterization. Yogendra Tiku, a competent actor who rarely gets the play he deserves in Hindi cinema, conveys the welled-up emotions of a father egging her daughter on to be in control of her own life.If it is going to be just one Hindi film this week, make sure it is Neerja. It is a powerful story that tugs gently and delicately at the heartstrings. It does not go overboard on attacking the lachrymal glands. But when it does, it is bang on.

‘Neerja’ could have been outstanding. But still, the film holds, and hold us with it. Both Shabana Azmi and Tikku, as the parents hoping for the best and dreading the worst for their ‘Laado’ (Neerja’s ‘pet name’), are excellent. They shine a light on the tragically-cut-short life of their daughter, a true inspirational heroine whose deeds need more than a memorial. They need to be remembered. I came out of the theatre, wet-eyed.

Neerja’s last words to her mother in the film is a famous Rajesh Khanna dialogue about Pushpa and her tears! Even though I hate them a lot, you just can’t leave the hall with dry eyes! Aamir, you have more company in the crying club. Go watch one of the best Hindi films made in recent times ASAP!

On the whole, NEERJA is a must watch ode to the youngest recipient of the highest civilian honour Ashok Chakra for displaying extraordinary courage and human kindness. It is a film that will make you stand up for what's genuinely Right without bothering about nationality, religion, sex, cast or colour of the skin. Most importantly as a movie watching experience, you'll be glued to the movie screen with tears and admiration welling up in your eyes. NEERJA is a movie that will make you a better person. Don't miss it!

Neerja is a heart-felt biopic that rises above ordinary with a great direction and stellar performances. I suggest you fasten your seat belts for this weekend with Neerja. Do watch! The film has been crafted with a lot of honesty. It is a much better watch than any crappy romantic tales that we had to sit through last week.
Ratings:4/5 Review By:Lokesh Dharmani Site:Masala
The film does have a couple of flaws. It tends to get a bit slow and manipulative in between. But these are small hiccups in a film that besides telling an inspiring, fearless story briefly comments on the need to bring up our daughters as fearlessly as we bring up our sons. Shabana Azmi nails it in that last scene. I walked out with moist eyes and a lump in my throat, and that’s saying a lot.

Your life should be big, not long,” declares Sonam Kapoor in the opening scenes of Neerja. You couldn’t have asked for a bigger cue than that in a drama that documents the life of a brave flight attendant who sacrifices her life when terrorists hijack a plane. There are moments in the second half where the plot seems to drag. But the climax is powerful and makes up for that blip. Watch this if you are looking for an engaging film about love, extraordinary bravery and honour. But keep the tissues near by. You will need them.

With a story that’s already celebrated, it’s notable how writer Saiwyn Quadras brings thrill and menace to those crucial hours, as lives are locked down and tortured. She lends depth to Neerja by exploring her past setbacks, and how it drives her to do the unthinkable.Still, ‘Neerja’ is a compelling watch. And, her’s is a story that deserves to be celebrated.
