The star of the film, of course, is Behl. Exceptionally convincing as a naïve, small town boy, who lets his heart do all the thinking for him, Behl is simply fantastic. A special mention has to be made of Anirutta K Jha, who is easy and endearing as Mastana’s sweetheart, Preeto. And, of course, it is the soulful music that makes this movie difficult to forget.

Jugni is a simple, heartfelt tale filmed with skill (DOP: Divakar Mani), edited crisply (Navnita Sen Datta) and narrated with remarkably restraint. Its impact is heightened by a strong female protagonist who knows her mind, a clutch of super performances by rarely seen actors, and a soundtrack (music composer: Clinton Cerejo) to kill for.Sugandha Garg, who is required to convey a wide range of emotions, is consistently on top her game. Newcomer Siddhant Behl has strong screen presence and possesses the chops to go much further as an actor.Looking for a film that delivers more than just superficial entertainment? Jugni is the end of your search.

‘Jugni’ works best when the characters are singing: Sidhant Behl pours his soul into his singing, making us believe, completely, in his Mastana : a bluff yet sensitive human in search of a life beyond the ‘ganne ke khet’ used for trysting with his lover. He is terrific. Garg is good too. As are the other characters. The film turns clunky in other places, the first-time inexperience showing, but we don’t really mind, because it has that rare thing : a soul, and of course, song. I came out humming.

Shefali Bhushan does a novice's job at helming the project and uses music and beautiful locales to salvage the scene. Bulle Shah's lyrical verses come alive with Vishal Bhardwaj and AR Rahman's rendering. But even in the music department, it isn't path breaking.Despite its freshness, the film fails to create an impact. It is hard to be affected by it due to its lack of depth.

Jugni Story:
Jugni (Firefly) is the beat of the soul, the free-flying spirit. Jugni is Vibhavari or Vibs (Sugandha Garg). Vibs is a music director, working on her first big break in the Hindi film industry. When work and home affairs, with her live-in boyfriend Sid (Samir Sharma) hit a high tide, Vibs hits the road with a glint of hope; to find music. The journey takes her to a village in Punjab in the search of a Bibi Saroop (Sadhana Singh), whose voice holds the promise that Vibs is searching for. But as the twist of fate would have it, Mastana (Siddhant Behl), Bibi's son and a proficient singer himself, is the voice and man who winds his way into Vibs' heart.
