Mary Kom   Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
In the end, the film ticks off each of Mary Kom's career achievements and key personal struggles, but doesn't tell you much more about her as a person than the innumerable headlines do. There is blood and sweat and grit in this story, but very little genuine feeling. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for "Mary Kom". It's perfectly watchable, but never great like it should've been.

Mary Kom goes on to show the real life story of this sports star, which not many are aware of. The film serves as an eye opener not just on the fact that India can produce international 'gold medal winning' boxers, but also that Manipur is very much a part of India! On the whole, MARY KOM is definitely worth a watch. Go for it.

On the whole, Mary Kom is a box-office champion. It may have started slow but fantastic word of mouth will see collections soaring and the film proving to be a hit at the box-office. Tax-exemption in Maharashtra and Rajasthan will help its business in these states. Other state governments should follow suit and grant tax-exemption to the deserving film.

The filmmaker has captured her indefatigable spirit beautifully. He has also thrown light on the administration's apathy towards sports and every time a film mirrors the red-tapism involved in the arena, you want to pick up the baton! But the main reason why Mary Kom appeals is because it doesn't just give you a ringside view of boxing; it leaves you rooting for our sportsmen who have put India on the world map.

What Mary Kom achieves is just the opposite of what it sets out to: the perpetually-on-the-edge style of storytelling takes the sting and authenticity out of the story of the inspirational rise of the spirited daughter of a Manipuri rice farmer in the world of amateur women’s boxing. But all said and done, Mary Kom is an infinitely better sports film than the bloated mess called Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Mary Kom, the boxer has done it many times, but now Mary Kom, the movie, truly packs a punch. Mary's story is that of an underdog's.It is a measured movie, deeply drawing us in with its protagonist, played with immense feeling by Priyanka Chopra. Mary's story is delivered with a sincerity that makes it irresistible.

While Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was a case of an overcooked narrative, Kumar's Mary Kom suffers from the contrary: an inconsistent narrative that seems too hurried to strike the right balance between her personal life and career, and ends up biting off more than it can chew. It could have done with 20 extra minutes of Kom's resilience, without liberally jumping time frames, to give shape to her stunted journey

The film gets bloated by extraneous songs. In its zeal to tell us how Kom is also a committed mom ( to an adorable set of twins , one of whom gets very sick occasionally) as well as a sportsperson, it tries too hard to tug at our heartstrings. And the climactic sequence goes on and on : a duel in the ring is automatically exciting, needing no schmaltzy revving up. There are also too-blatant product placements strewn right through, which distract from the story.

Mary Kom is not an unbearable film but it is largely unwatchable. It was painful to see the most hardworking sporting star of India being reduced in a film that is a caricaturish blend of Chak De! and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
