Carrie  Review

Pierce has a great cast - mom is played by the Oscar-nominated Julianne Moore. And yet, her telling is flat and listless. One of the big problems is that in this version, Carrie is mostly in control of her powers - she orchestrates murder and mayhem like a grand symphony unlike the earlier Carrie whose powers were more uncontrollable and therefore more fearsome. This Carrie isn’t worth spending time with but I do recommend that you find the De Palma film. It’s still scary. I’m going with two stars.

While Carrie begins eerily enough, there is a turning point where the screenplay abandons psychological horror of the kind that Shutter or The Conjuring dish out, and goes for full-gear gore instead. It then becomes more graphic and visceral rather than creepy. Although it cannot top Brian de Palma's 1976 movie, this retelling does allow more empathy for Carrie; she is not evil just for the heck of it. It's a case of the underdog suddenly becoming an overlord.

Carrie isn't a horror film, in fact it doesn't even stay true to its genre. The posters and promos are quite misleading to the actual content of the film. The only scares the film manages to raise are in the blood drenched climax when she goes all out on a killing spree. Also the pace of the film is extremely slow, the romantic track and the supporting characters actually weigh the film down. Carrie's onslaught of violence in the end seems abrupt and the background story to it is rushed. Neither scary nor engaging, Carrie suffers an identity crises because of a weak script and sketchy direction.

Moretz's Carrie is too confident and stable to be a victim of the world. Her trauma is in her screams and not in her silences. Watching her attempt to portray rage and insanity becomes almost painful as she begins to walk like a short -armed T-Rex covered in blood at the end. Had it been cast better, Carrie could have been a true horror flick, but now it’s just truly horrifying.

Kimberly Pierce’s Carrie cannot be called the perfect horror film. But the director who broke out with Boys Don’t Cry, managed to capture the heartbreaking story of a teenager with loads of special effects of course!
