Taken 3 doesn’t work, not even as a guilty pleasure, because the cheap thrill of watching an ageing Neeson deliver visceral blows to the bad guys has lost its novelty now. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five. Don’t waste your time or your money

What works greatly to the movie's credit is the pacing (never a dull moment here!) and that sense of 'What's going to happen next?' Mills and his group of friends rely heavily on technology to stay ahead of the cops as well as to nab the bad guys. Dotzler and team try to predict what Mills will do next. Spruell's don Malankov, suitably debauched and with a Spetsnaz background, is as nasty and cold-hearted as they come. But Grace's Kim is really the most riveting. All in all, a suitable swansong for the franchise.

The takeaway: Taken was successful because Neeson represented an old-world weary heroism that could take down new-world villainy one hand tied. You cheered for him because he wanted nothing other than saving his family. In Taken 3, he only stands for himself and doesn’t seem to care whom all he hurts in the process. The other takeaway is more useful: Car GPS has never come as handy to solve a crime before, even if the motive ultimately is as ancient as they come. There is a third takeaway too: There won’t be a Taken 4.

All good things must come to an end. This is also true of bad film franchises. The Taken films have adhered to the same formula to attract the audiences. But to be honest, we could have done with only one film as the third installment is nothing but an unnecessary drag. Inadequate direction, forceful fight sequences and a predictable narrative is what Taken 3 is about.
