Hawaizaada  Hindi Movie Review

You know that the makers have their heart in the right place because of the scale on which they have mounted this drama. The sets and VFX deserve a mention. However, you come back a tad disappointed because unlike Shivi who managed to put the wind beneath his wings, the film itself doesn't provide even surface-level thrills.

A well-intentioned but stodgy cinematic fleshing out of an obscure footnote in aviation history, Hawaizaada takes eons to climb to cruising altitude. When it does get there with excessive load weighing it down, it is pretty much on a wing and a prayer. Sadly, he does not back up the surface gloss with the kind of dramatic traction and logic that can hold a two-and-a-half-hour-long film together.

Inspired from real life events of Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, the first Indian scientist credited to have constructed the first unmanned plane, has a historically significant event at its core. Thanks to the film’s half-baked treatment, it is reduced to appearing like a flight of fancy of an impulsive wastrel than an ambitious dream of a strong-willed genius. Hawaizaada, in the end, is a flight of fancy that fails to take off.

Hindi cinema feeds us enough fiction for us to expect a completely true story told with hundred per cent accuracy. So the factual question marks are not entirely what we fault 'Hawaizaada' for. True or not, it was a good subject that the director had his hands on. But sadly, 'Hawaizaada' limps a bit too much to even come close to convincingly recreate the life of a man who dreamt to be the first one to fly.

The film barely touches upon anything that's got to do with the story pertaining to the first manmade Indian flight and is far away from reality. It is instead loaded with melodrama. At the end of the film, one really feels sorry for the film's producer because the over-expense was just not needed! On the whole, HAWAIZAADA is all gloss no substance. Skip it.

The awkward tone of the movie makes you wonder whom it was made for. There’s too much romance and too little adventure for children, and it’s too foolish for adults. Puri attempts to infuse Hawaizaada with a child-like sense of wonder. Regrettably he manages to render a film that is childish.

Well, for starters the entire plot which clearly seemed to have lost its focus from being Hawaizaada to becoming ‘Ishaqzaada’. Having said that, out of the 153 minute long movie, it will be difficult to subtract the amount of time wasted on songs which keep popping up every now and then.

Hawaizaada is an ambitious attempt to chronicle the life of the maverick Indian scientist Shivkar Talpade who claims to have invented an airplane before the Wright Brothers. The film oscillates between showcasing Talpade’s blinding love and his mad ingenuity. What’s also jarring are the elaborate sets that have been constructed to transport us to the 19th century era. All of this makes it difficult to take Hawaizaada seriously as a liberally-altered biopic. The premise was promising, but the film never soars dramatically.
