At almost three hours Lingaa is perhaps a tad too long, but the producer and director’s compulsions are understandable.Yeah sure, the film does test your patience at times, but Rajini papers over those moments with his trademark charm, witty dialogues, and not a bit of help from his gang of thieves.

Lingaa is worth the watch for Rajinikanth but falls midway between being a gripping social drama and a full throttle entertainer. There are a few punchlines to take away too, for instance Rajinikanth says ‘I have not failed; I have only postponed my success’. Bottom line: Thalaivaa doesn’t disappoint

Still, for a film that takes almost three hours to tell its story, many of the crucial elements are conveyed through dialogues (for example, we never see Lingaa's steps to expose the MP but we see him narrating them in the climax) this takes away the heroism from the character. The scale of the production, some of Santhanam's one-liners and the charisma of Rajinikanth somewhat make it bearable but they aren't enough. But the biggest disappointment is the outlandish climax stunt piece

The film makes no pretences about being a classic epic-in-the-making. It relies on the time-tested masala formula, selling the style quotient of an ageing but still much loved and revered superhero. But at 175 minutes, the film is a stretch.Whatever the reviews and critics say, no Rajini fan is going to miss this film for sure. For the rest, I would say, it is still a pleasant time-pass entertainment.

To sum up, Lingaa is a mainstream entertainer with some substance, playing to Rajini's strengths. Low expectations and high patience levels would enable you to enjoy Rajinikanth's screen persona. Verdict: Rajinikanth's mesmerizing energy let down by writing. But give it your time for Superstar's non-diminishing charisma.

Perhaps, the movie could have used with a little bit of cutting edge and full blown vengeance at its core. Also, the long drawn-out climax is a downer. But hey, given all the action packed sequences accorded to the actor known for his kicks and punches, one can't complain much for this piece of masala entertainment, at the least Lingaa will go well with the ardent fans of Rajinikanth.

Like all his films, ‘Lingaa’ is basically three hours of Rajini Saar doing his thing. And it is three hours of full-on `masti’ and ‘mazaa': no half-measures for the man who just has to walk across the screen in slo-mo to send his fans into paroxysms. What is completely, immediately infectious is that Rajinikanth takes himself not at all seriously: he knows you want fun, fun, fun, and that he dishes out in dollops.

The story template is no different from many of Rajinikanth's yesteryear big hits from past. The movie is narrated through a long flashback sequence focused on Raja Lingeswaram (Rajinikanth) who builds a dam/reservoir with his own money. The present day Lingaa (Rajinikanth) who is a small time crook goes to the village to save the dam from the villains. When you feel the goodwill of Raja Lingeshwaran grows the brand aura of real-life Rajini, you know very well the movie has worked on you.

Lingaa has pleasing moments to satisfy the Rajinikanth fan in you but the cineaste in you is not properly taken care of. Unlike KS Ravikumar - Rajinikanth's previous outings, Lingaa has an unexciting storyline with less elements of thriller, but it does offer an entertaining movie-watching experience in a small-scale.
