Pompeii Movie Review

You will notice the inevitable parallels with Gladiator and Game of Thrones and the script is often rudimentary ("My name is Milo. You killed my father. Prepare to die!" or "You looked at him. Did you see his muscles?"). But that is par for the course because brutish gladiators are meant to fight and kill, not speak flowing prose in the King's English. The love story itself is forgettable and cheesy. But that is only incidental compared to what you can watch this movie for - its fight scenes and cataclysmic climax, both produced and recreated in good detail.

Paul Anderson attempts to use elements from every TV and film ever made on the subject, mesh it into a bloodbath of slow motion fight scenes and Greek mumbo-jumbo to present one of the most tiring love stories ever told. This time it isn't a battle for an empire (300) or a sole survivor fighting for his family (Gladiator), but a romance between a low born fighter (Harington) and a higher ranking Cassia (Browning). Then there is the backdrop of the boiling and about to erupt Mount Vesuvius which is more fun than the sloppy love story.

Pompeii generously borrows elements (and storyline and character arcs and production design) from Gladiator, Troy, Titanic and The Princess Bride -- but without the brilliant execution of any of its influences. Speaking of influences, this one should be kept away from children. Scenes of graphic, almost mindless violence litter the celluloid -- and I use litter as an understatement.Pompeii is one of those rare films for which I am glad that a 3D format was used. If cheesy, overdone, masala flicks are your kind of fare, this is your kind of film. For the rest of us, Pompeii just blows.

The film's visual effects team have done a fantastic job of recreating the natural disaster. From the fluttering delicacy of the falling ash to the doom-laden clouds, it's wonderfully imagined. Everything and everyone else in Pompeii is ridiculously artificial. Worse, the wait for the final eruption feels tiresome because the conflicts are weak and the action sequences are thoroughly unimpressive. Pompeii is a disaster movie, so it's not as though anyone should expect much by way of logic or narrative, but you do expect some spectacules. Sadly, Anderson delivers too little too late.

Pompeii definitely was a complete disaster movie. With a klutzy actor like Kit Harrington as the lead actor, I can’t help but wait for the moment when Mount Vesuvius will erupt and burn down the whole city. And finally the moment came. Thanks to the spectacular CG lava. With a constant sneer on my face, I watched the city of Pompeii burn. Guilty pleasure at its max. But no, it wasn’t over. From a die-hard situation to an utterly-butterly melodrama, Pompeii ended in most cheesiest way ever possible.
