There was a time, not too long ago, that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy were making such terrific music, you’d think they could churn out chartbusters with their eyes closed. Watching their music play out in Rock On 2, you have to wonder if in fact these songs were created while half asleep.Nostalgia for 2008’s Rock On is something the makers of Rock On 2 lean on heavily. Bad idea. Because it only serves to draw attention to how much weaker the new film is in comparison. The easy, laidback vibe that powered the previous film makes way for a more labored tone and a plot that feels unmistakably contrived.

But the sequel doesn't feel like it's about the same guys any more, the headway in the script is marked by contrivances not progression. Rock On 2’s frantic mood shifts between art, commerce, philanthropy, politics and personal life weigh down its potential to satisfy on a single front.

As a musical, Rock On 2 does not hit rock bottom at any point. But for the most part, the film finds itself trapped in rocky terrain. So its flow is staccato. A musical drama sans a particularly strong score is a like a painter's blank canvas daubed with dull greys. And that precisely is the problem with Rock On 2. It rocks only sporadically, and it almost never sways the audience enough for the latter to crave for another helping.

A contrived script, poor music and a lengthy run time. I’d say you would rather give this one a miss. If you’re a music or band junkie, sit at home -catch all your favorite band documentaries on Youtube! Rock On 2‘s band Magik is completely tragic! If you were ever interested in forming a band, this one could kill your dreams! I’m going with a 2/5

Rock On 2 is like that stomach ache we get for liking a chocolate and then splurging too much on it. Even though the cast members are good, and the direction is decent, you can’t scream like a fanboy during this performance, like you did eight years ago. Magik may have returned, but the original magic is sorely missing. Avoid, if you don’t wanna get disappointed. On a separate note, I am not in favor of having Rock On 3, but can we have a spinoff on that Manjot character please?

Also, the script is a major downer. It is way too contrived, directionless and morose to hold your interest. With no strong conflict point to hold it all together, the story goes haywire. The narration tries too hard to manipulate your feelings and spoon-feed emotions by explaining the unsaid thoughts of the characters, depriving you the joy of discovering it for yourself. The music is shockingly weak. Barring the Usha Uthup track, it is not a patch on the former's iconic tracks. Having said that, we are still open to a third instalment, provided Magik finds a valid reason to reunite. After all, music needs to come from the heart for you to feel it.

As you might perceive, the storyline’s toothpick thin. Also you do wonder how Magik has retained its brand value after a hiatus of eight years. They aren’t exactly a legendary band whose quality of music, their break-ups and patch-ups would drive even loyalists into a state of euphoria. In the event, Rock on 2 comes off as a Bollywood vanity exercise, which assumed that an encore was in order. Honestly, some commercially successful as well as aesthetically accomplished films are left alone. To carp that Rock On 2 lacks the freshness and funky drive of its prequel would amount to stating the obvious. Suffice it to say, the sequel isn’t exactly a feast for the ears and the mind, in that order.

Rock On 2 strengthens my belief that it’s never a good idea to make a sequel unless there’s some unfinished business that the world needs to know about. The second instalment of the hit 2008 musical Rock On!!, starring Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Purab Kohli, seems terribly contrived and insipid. It isn’t backed by a solid script. The magic and charm that were evident in the original film, which chronicled the reunion of a college band, Magik, are missing in its sequel. The twists seem forced and the introduction of the two new bandmates seem unnecessary. Watch this only if you are a Rock On groupie, otherwise skip it.

A good sequel is one that starts from where the prequel ended and retains the essence of the original. Rock On 2 scores full marks in that department. The film starts with the last stage performance of Magik and gradually takes us into the lives of each member of the band.Shujaat Saudagar, in his debut movie, pieces together all his characters one by one, who are deeply affected by either a tragedy, guilt or success. It’s interesting how Joe and Aditya seem to have exchanged not only their houses but personalities as well. Rock On 2 is a good attempt on following a band’s story. We miss Luke’s Rob but we do welcome the new band members who are effortlessly brought into the band.
