Kaira is what one might describe as emotionally stunted. She clearly has commitment issues, she can’t decide what (or who) her heart wants, and she puts up a wall the moment any of the young men in her life seek genuine attachment. Plus there’s a stack of unresolved issues with her parents.Alia’s performance, in fact, may be the best thing about this indulgent film that has little by way of plot and way too much talking. But these are small gifts in an overlong, disappointing film that misses its mark. I’m going with two out of five for Dear Zindagi. Honestly, it’s a slog.

On the whole, Dear Zindagi is a film for the gentry and will do well mainly in the premium multiplexes of the big cities. Its business in lesser multiplexes, single-screen cinemas and other cities and towns will, generally speaking, be below the mark.

Dear Zindagi is as good as, if not better than, all the Hindi films with female 'heroes' that we have seen in recent months. Dear Zindagi pulls at the heartstrings. It is also loaded with genteel humour. But what works above all is that the pop philosophy/psychology that underlines the drama at the film's core isn't the least bit pulpy. Recommended without reservation.

If English Vinglish appealed to youngsters to be more gracious of their parents' disadvantages, Dear Zindagi points out the impact of callous parenting in the long run.As do the final 15 minutes devoted to winding up every single plot point, down to the last rambling detail, which deprive Dear Zindagi of a lyrical finish.

Dear Zindagi is a lovely picture, made with finesse and heart, and one that not only takes some stigma off the idea of seeking therapy, but -- in the most natural of ways -- goes a long way in making a viewer think of the people who matter most. The single smartest trick in this film, however, may well be the primary casting decision. Because a good therapist is a superstar.

But unlike her first film English Vinglish that hit the bulls eye subtly, here the message is hammered. Of course some of the writing has merit. There are funny and clever one-liners. There are numerous analogies drawn to explain the innumerable relationships one encounters in today’s fast-flirting urban life. Some of this makes you chuckle, some of it makes you cry. So far so good. However, the first half of the film meanders, making you restless. If you’re in the mood to do some soul-searching this weekend, this film could do it for you.

What it is all about, therefore, is as good as anyone's guess. The magic lay in the execution. For most of its parts, Dear Zindagi has its moments, but there are those stray notes that don't necessarily fit properly in the scheme of things.Genius is about knowing when to stop," says Jug in one of the film's best scenes. Maybe Gauri Shinde should have taken his advice and stopped before Dear Zindagi began taking a toll on people's patience. Watch the film for Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan. It's an emotional joyride which won't harm you when watched once.

Dear Zindagi will definitely appeal to you if you love slice of life film. A little bit of trimming here and there would have been good, and it is not a typical Bollywood movie. However that shouldn’t stop you from not witnessing one of Alia’s best performances and SRK being his charming best.

What could have been a solid drama with emotional heft — the qualities that made Shinde’s debut ‘English Vinglish’ such an engaging watch –built upon the exploration of the fact that our adulthood is shaped by our childhood in ways we don’t really understand, turns into a kitchen sink talkathon, where all the characters are given lines which are meant to be deep, but come off mostly banal and obvious.

This film, at its core, is very much an 'indie', as it were — a very talkie/ conversational sort of feature, perhaps preachy, or overladen with 'gyanpatti', but mostly quiet, even indoorsy. Why do things seem slightly wishy-washy and laboriously long then? As I said before, it just appears as if the film's unable to find a point, place a nail there, and just hammer it in.

On the whole, DEAR ZINDAGI comes across as a slow-paced cerebral and contemporary slice of life tale about the challenges today’s generation of girls face in a rapidly shifting landscape. At the Box-Office, it will appeal only to a niche segment of the multiplex audience on account of lack of entertainment value as well as its abstruse and esoteric treatment. It will therefore find the going tough at the box office.

Dear Zindagi tries to hammer into our heads how important mental health awareness is, through a story that’s sadly not very powerful. For life lessons and Shah Rukh may be, but otherwise not a ‘must watch’.

The tale of a twenty-something cinematographer, Kiara (Alia Bhatt), who’s undergoing a crippling quarter-life-crisis, is joyously entertaining. While Khan offers sturdy support in this film, it’s Bhatt’s film all the way. Their relationship seems effortless. If you are looking for a heartwarming, sensitive film about troubled twenty-somethings, then make a date with Dear Zindagi. You won’t live to regret it.
