This time he gives us a slow-building pressure-cooker of a film that’s a respectable follow-up. Although it feels way too long at roughly 133 minutes, and takes many liberties with the truth while still insisting it’s based on true events, The Conjuring 2 ultimately succeeds in delivering slow-mounting dread punctuated by powerful moments of absolute terror. I’m going with three out of five. I don’t know if I can see a nun dressed in a habit without a chill going down my spine.

Even with its glitches, The Conjuring 2 gets one thing right; it scares the hell out of you.

True, the possessions get a tad repetitive and the jump scares do make you numb, but they are well-balanced by the entry of a very ambiguous third investigator (Simon McBurney). Don't get hung up on the little things, the accuracy... just let the movie work its magic. This is exactly what is expected of Conjuring 2 and it satisfies. And you never know, there might be another one in the making. This is a movie even non-horror fans can appreciate. It is classic old-school horror; a deep dive into dread.

The film attempts to compensate for its clichéd elements by telling the audience that it is based on real life incidents, but this marketing gimmick has been stale for quite a while now. The film credits four different writers but I presume they were responsible more for writing in the scares rather than a good story. The only way for the supremely talented Wan to bypass John Carpenter levels of horror greatness is if he attempts horror movies with better stories. For now this is simply an entertaining date movie, and a surprisingly good horror sequel entry. Carry an extra pair of underwear to the theaters and unpack them when the scene with the painting begins.

As with most horror, The Conjuring 2 is also very participatory. Those looking for a good time will probably convince themselves that a few scenes are scarier than they really are. It’ll play well at midnight screenings, horror movie marathons, and other situations where there is no option but to have a great time. But something tells me that its appeal will be restricted to only the most hardcore fans of the first film. Without an emotional core to latch on to, everyone else will probably be left underwhelmed.

Rarely are sequels better than their predecessors. When it comes to horror films, that is even rarer. But James Wan and his gang have delivered a really well-made The Conjuring 2 that is consistently engaging, definitely better than the first part, and this time, things are not just scary, but at times, funny as well
