Veerappan does not shy away from making a great deal of noise, but the film is more akin to soggy gelatin sticks delivering a damp squib than a big explosive device triggering an earth-shattering bang. At no point in the film does one get the impression that RGV might be anywhere near regaining his lost touch. The maker of Satya and Company is nowhere in sight in this messy, pedestrian thriller.

Veerappan gives an insight into the life and times of the dreaded bandit. RGV is in good form. Sandeep Bhardwaj as Veerappan is superb.

In his remake of his 2016 Kannada movie Killing Veerappan, the once-brilliant Varma finally seems to be paying attention again. However, this is not to suggest that Veerappan is a return to form. Men, women and children perish like flies and there are gut-wrenching torture scenes, but the real violence is felt by the ear-drums.

In all fairness, Sandeep brings Veerappan alive and the National Award winner Usha as Muthulakshmi is convincing. Though not in top form, RGV does redeem himself to some degree. And his film does allow you to get up, close and personal with the notorious criminal who made a monkey of the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Governments, because he knew the loopholes in the system.

While the first half of the film builds up the story and the pace, the film's second half dips slightly. On the whole, VEERAPPAN has violence that may seem a bit over the top for a certain segment of audience. With its unconventional and extremely well-narrated story line and Ram Gopal Varma's trademark filmmaking skills VEERAPPAN will most likely be patronized by a niche segment of the audience.

Veerappan fictionalises the life of the notorious brigand, brought to us in typical Ram Gopal Varma style – gritty and engaging.A cop is killed by Veerappan (Sandeep Bharadwaj) and the dead man’s wife Priya (Lisa Ray) joins the force as a spy to avenge her husband’s death. And she uses the bandit’s wife to get to him. That, more or less, is it. RGV has told it taut, specially in the second half that is all about Operation Killing Veerappan.
