Haven't we watched scores of films on dysfunctional families? But #KapoorAndSons steers clear of repetitiveness/melodrama. Emerges trumps...KapoorAndSons is one of Dharma's BEST films. Watertight script, remarkable storytelling, crisp editing. Film hits the right notes...Take a bow Shakun Batra. You're a splendid storyteller. KJo and Fox, this one's a sure-shot WINNER. My 4 stars for this one! #KapoorAndSon

On the whole, Kapoor & Sons is an entertaining film for the youth and the families, mainly of the cities, and for the multiplex-frequenting viewers. It will not be able to do much in the single-screen cinemas and in small centres but its business in the cities and multiplexes will be big enough to make the film a hit.

Kapoor & Sons is a film about a family with deep-rooted troubles, and -- for two-thirds of its running time -- it works rather well. The aforementioned problems are all there, but the characters are genuinely easy to warm up to, and the performances are pretty strong.Shakun Batra’s sophomore effort is a finely, intelligently crafted film which stumbles because of its eagerness.

This film is produced by Dharma Productions along with Fox. It is heartening to see Karan Johar’s film family having grown up enough to get out of their bubble and face some tangible issues. Thankfully, there is no Kantaben and so no treating someone’s sexuality flippantly either. Watch this. It might remind of your own family issues and make you a bit squirmish but is also largely feel good and entertaining.

What impressed me most though is how the tenderness under the tempers comes through. Despite the bitterness, affections have somehow survived. It’s difficult to hold a grudge for too long around a brother, a parent. You just accept what the other person is, believes the film. Sometimes when life offers you a lollipop instead of change, you see the joke in it and zoom ahead.

Fawad plays his straight, and he doesn’t lift off the screen. Rishi gets some laughs in, but has to struggle against the heavy prosthetics. The two people who kept me watching all the way were Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak Shah : they play long-time partners in a marriage gone sour, and create a relationship which has enough strength and weaknesses that you want to know more about. These two deserve a separate film.

Alia Bhatt lends the free-spirited and fun-loving Tia impressive malleability. In the emotional scene in which she reveals a tragic turning point in her life, she switches gear effortlessly.Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak are in fine fettle as the jaded man and wife who have drifted apart irretrievably.Rishi Kapoor, notwithstanding the overdone prosthetic makeup, is perfect in the guise of the full-blooded nonagenarian that nothing can stop.Kapoor And Sons is a winner all the way.

Shakun Batra’s lively direction captures the family moments brilliantly and one feels for this tale in an instant. It’s an endearing family movie! The writers try to overdo when it comes to humor. Comedy seems like a weak link in this otherwise emotionally burdened film. Kapoor And Sons could be your pick if emotional family dramas are your thing. This is a slice of life film, laden with some cherishable moments.

But all credit goes to director Shakun, who holds together all of this like a perfect winning trophy. His sensibilities in the family drama genre will certainly set a new benchmark.

Director Shakun Batra and writer Ayesha Devitre Dhillon may win points for tackling some conflicts untouched by Bollywood, but their process is unfortunately sluggish, and often, exaggerated, ruining the impact. There are clever setpieces but he never weaves them into a tight plot. It’s a ticking time bomb, but one that fizzles out in the end.

Director Shakun Bhatra’s Kapoor & Sons, a story about two brothers who return home to the picturesque Coonoor, a hill station in Tamil Nadu, to visit their ailing grandfather, is a touching film made terrific by some great performances. Of course, that the two are supremely good-looking only helps matters. The expectations hoisted on being the perfect child in an Indian family are wonderfully told in this film. Kapoor & Sons flourishes as a unit and is the sum total of mature performances by the entire Kapoor clan.
