It’s impossible not to be giggling at the sheer daftness of these dungaree-sporting heroes, my favorite of whom was Bob, the teddy bear-clutching, rat-befriending Minion. Another highlight was the appearance of a beloved character that shows up in the end for a brief cameo. Minions has very little to offer by way of inventive story, but 90 minutes go by quickly in the company of these bumbling scene-stealers. I’m going with three out of five. Kids will love every moment of this cheerfully silly outing.

The minions somehow end up being picked as henchmen by Scarlet, who takes them to England. The foursome spend little time together before they are pushed into her plot to steal the Queen of England’s crown. Hamm is the voice of Scarlet’s inventor husband Herb. The dungeons, the Beatles and some inspired songs later, the minions are back where they started. A lot more bruised.

Minions scores brownie points for effectively connecting the prequel to the rest of the franchise. But one can't help but wonder what the point of the film was.Without a strong character to lead, a film starring the sidekicks isn't all that interesting.Furthermore, Scarlet Overkill's backstory goes largely unexplored and hurriedly wrapped up. Too long to keep its audience glued, Minions could have been a much better watch were it Minion sized.

Minions made their way into our hearts with the unabashedly hilarious Despicable Me in 2010. Five years on, these goggle-eyed yellow creatures take on the centre-stage in this origin-story flick with their gibberish blabber and their stock pratfall frolics to amuse us. At 91 minutes, these tiny yellow blobs steal the show from their human counterparts. With charming elements galore, adorable gibberish talk and winsome screen presence, the film is cuteness overload.
