Watching Amy feels like retrieving a special, hidden box of pictures and videos and other souvenirs that once belonged to someone whose loss one still grieves.A fitting tribute to the lady who made jazz and the blues both interesting and accessible to a generation that couldn’t comprehend Miles Davis or Dinah Washington, Amy will make you wonder why we are so critical of icons we swear to love.

Amy's last years are depicted respectfully. Even during the most unflattering moments, like her last, disastrous gig in Belgrade, there is no hint of cinematic suggestion. The most touching sequence however, has got to be her recording session with jazz legend Tony Bennett at Abbey Road, which reveals what a vulnerable and sensitive soul she really was. If you're a fan of her music, you wouldn't want to miss this. The singer may be gone but the songs thankfully, live on.

What makes this film exceptional is the candid moments delivered through the brilliantly edited combination of archive footage culled from home-video footage, video cameras, mobile phones, newsreels, paparazzi clips and TV shows. The film is brilliantly layered with fine editing by Chris King, where Amy Winehouse's music is layered over her lyrics in handwritten fonts, which float on screen, creating an illusion of a personal journal telling her tale from start to finish.Overall, it is a highly engrossing and sensitively told documentary of a life wasted.

If you’re a fan of Amy Winehouse and want to go beyond the music, Amy is the perfect film to dig deeper into the life of the legend. It will make you uncomfortable and force you to think. This gut-wrenching film is a must-watch for fans across the board.

In an interview after the release of her first album, long before she became a celebrity, Winehouse said, "I don't think I'm going to be at all famous. I don't think I can handle it. I'd probably go mad." It breaks your heart because, as Amy shows, she was right.
