Rio 2 English Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:Ibnlive (CNN IBN)
"Rio 2" has neither the wit of "The Lego Movie", nor the classic appeal of "Frozen", yet it's a perfectly enjoyable sequel, bright and beautiful to look at, and set to a clutch of terrific tunes. And once again, Jesse Eisenberg's delightfully nerdish voice-performance does full justice to Blu's sheer anxiousness. Predictable yet undeniably entertaining, "Rio 2" is not a bad way at all to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. I'm going with three out of five.

A lot of the gags revolve around the domesticated (he wears a fanny pack and carries a GPS device) Blu's attempts to readjust to the wild as well as win over Eduardo's favour. Eduardo thinks more highly of Roberto, who on his part is quite happy to reconnect with his childhood playmate Jewel. Nigel and Gabi take the cake and will have you in splits with their crazy behaviour. The baddies this time are a group of loggers who want to raze the part of the rainforest the macaws inhabit. Colourful and well-paced except for a cloyingly sweet song or two, the kids will enjoy this one.

The sad part is that Rio was a really fun film and it would have stayed that way if one hadn't watched Rio 2, because now that I know the extension to that story, it's a little bit difficult to like the first one as well as I did before watching the second one. Strictly confined within the box and The Formula, Rio 2 might be the Ram-Leela of animation/Hollywood when it comes to visuals but as far as children's films go, it remains less innovative.

While Rio was a smooth ride, this one is quite a bumpy affair. There are loads of cheesy moments and parts that seem forced to make the end product more likeable. Also sometimes less is more and Saldanha puts too many cooks to make this broth, making the final dish somewhat distasteful. Not that kids won't enjoy Blu and Jewel's flying antics, but adults who loved them in the beginning might start finding them a bit tiresome. Also the Meet the Parents inspired scenes where Blu has to impress his father-in-law, or the mid air football match between the birds seem rushed. There is an effort to make this into a blockbuster by giving the audience what's popular without taking any efforts to have some originality.
