Since JAL has made the rounds of the festival circuit, a section of the film industry *might* write it off as a 'festival film', with minimal/zilch 'commercial prospects'. But let me correct those who think that way: JAL is *not* art house cinema. Sure, it narrates a rustic tale, but it is as much 'commercial' as a commercial film would be. The only difference is, this is *not* a no-brainer. On the whole, JAL makes a rock-solid impact. It's poignant and powerful and I suggest, you take time out to watch this truly gripping fare.

'Jal' captures the bare beauty of the golden cracked earth and its tortuous tapestry in artfully mounted frames (cinematography: Sunita Radia). It's a picture-perfect album with stark sights and parched souls. The story is stirring, handling several complex issues in the same breath, and yes, that does leave us a bit thirsty. It also needs a better edit. There are over-dramatized scenes (Bakka dragged across the desert) to enhance visual impact, but the solid performances and soundtrack make up for it. The story scatters often like a fistful of sand, yet, for those seeking something different, go quench your thirst.

Jal takes its own time in unravelling, fooling itself into believing that a certain Govarikar is its creator, and when it finally does reach its climax, it turns out to be completely predictable.There is no room for emotion in a dog eat dog world; and all these plans sound brilliant but they really amount to nothing if not executed efficiently. In my humble opinion, Jal would have made a much more powerful literary piece than it makes a film. As a story on celluloid, it is simply a dead bore.

Jal’ may have been started off to tell us imaginatively about a pressing problem : how lack of water can lead to extinction. But the treatment – tacky, melodramatic, stagey—makes it difficult to sit through. The best thing about ‘Jal’ is the distinctive Shubha Mudgal song that’s used in the background.

If Mr Bhansali ever had to accommodate his vision within the radius of four mud huts and a parched horizon, Jal would be the result. The story is tropical and interesting; the execution of screenplay, not so much. It is therefore unsettling to notice that this visual representation lacks basic direction and a sense of sequencing; the filmmaking aspect is such a mess that it affects the fluidity of storytelling.

Jal is a work of remarkable resonance. The sheer visual mastery of Malik's directorial debut takes your breath away. The sheer velocity and spatial harmony of the intrinsically disturbed desertscape, the incredibly nuanced sound design and the powerhouse performances by actors who forget the camera is watching them, make this a work whipped into eternity by vast stretches of unchained artistry. Girish Malik's film 'Jal' tells the story of a dry land, and an attempt to get water back to it. But here in the Great Rann of Kutch water's not the only thing being scoped out. It's a story of people and how their lives are weaved together. Watch the movie if such 'experimental' movies interest you, or any new kind of cinema. In case pure entertainment is your drug, skip this one. Jal was much loved in the film festival circuit. It's great that films like this one get to live their glory on various movie screens. Now, it's up to you really to watch, and judge.

Though I am always open to being drawn into the realm of experimental cinema, Jal seemed more like a powerpoint presentation to me. Though for the first hour the film appears lucid and gripping, the second hour becomes bothersome and tediously long. What really destroyed the quintessence of the film is the rough and casual editing that doesn’t allow the magnanimity of scene to settle in. Jal could have been an eloquent offering but misses the tranquility that doesn’t let the drama’s tempo settle in.
