As predictable as The Crew might be, you see why it works. The special effects are Hollywood-grade, high-budget. The 3D (there isn’t a regular option) is passable.Bu t you know what’s not Hollywood? The set piece where ground control always lets out a collective cheer when something goes right is totally missing. The Russians just absorb the moment quietly. It feels more real.

When we’re done scratching our heads (and drawing blood) at the ludicrousness of the first half, finally disaster strikes. In his defence, Lebedev steps into his own when he has to direct his actors during a catastrophe. The cinematography is efficacious, with believable mushrooms of smoke and fire engulfing the island. The Crew’s two halves are incongruous. Do as you like during the first half, but, do not move from that theatre seat after the interval.

Shot in IMAX, the stunt choreography is relentless, albeit unrealistic, though that’s in tune with most Hollywood disaster-action flicks so it’s not entirely indigestible. As the two male leads begin to shine, they create some nail-biting sequences helped along by excellent CGI work. ‘The Crew’ lands somewhat short of hitting the emotional mark as some of the beats are lost in translation (read ‘dubbing’), yet top-notch effects and an uncompromising second half puts it on par with some of the best action-adventure flicks Hollywood has to offer. Hopefully, this signals the infusion of more Russian cinema to Indian screens, something that film aficionados, and even casual moviegoers should look forward to.
