The result, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, is easily Johar’s best film since his widely polarizing extramarital love story Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna from 2006. Despite the occasionally mawkish undertones and the blatant attempt at emotional manipulation in its final act, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil gives you a hero that makes you care. I suspect you’ll be a slobbering mess at the end of the film, a puddle of tears when the lights come back on. Johar knows how to do that. It’s a skill that’s stayed with him even if his grammar has changed.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five. Prepare yourself for a good cry.

Karan Johar deserves a huge pat on his back for his direction. He has handled the subject with complete sensitivity and sincerity .On the whole, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a box-office winner. It is entertaining and will be loved by the youth, city audience and multiplex audience. It may not find favour with the single-screen cinema audience and the audience in smaller centres, but the target audience of the film is sizeable enough to ensure that decent profits accrue to all those associated with the film. Business Overseas will be excellent.

Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, an unconventional love-and-friendship yarn narrated with flair and feeling, certainly isn't only for dyed-in-the-wool romantics. It is an infectiously buoyant, emotionally engaging and superbly acted drama that could disarm even the most inveterate of cynics. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is by far Karan Johar's best film to date: mature, sure-handed and thoroughly entertaining. It employs the devices of mainstream Bollywood, but does so with an acute awareness of exactly where to draw the line so as not to stray into overt bubblegum territory.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a film about tedha love -- crooked love, love that refuses to stay straight -- and about the unshared, pure potency of unrequited passion. It is a film about words long and sharp, elaborate and precise, and about the way we muck up and often manage to slip -- inadequately and without definition -- between them and between the lines. The heart wants what it wants, and sometimes all we need is a compelling reason to cry. Thank you, Karan Johar. For this film feels like a sob.

There’s a lot of good news, and only a little bad news, so let’s start with the former. With Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Karan Johar has let go of the “candy” but retained the “floss”, resulting in a beautiful-looking film that isn’t bereft of logic. That said, you usually come away from a Karan Johar movie dreaming of singing sweet tunes in the Alps; but ADHM makes you realize just how cold it is, up there. Go watch it for a relatable portrayal of modern-day relationships.

On the whole, AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL is a contemporary and a progressive take on relationships from the master story teller Karan Johar. It is a perfect Diwali entertainer which packages rich visuals, chartbuster music and an engrossing screenplay on a large canvas. At the Box-Office, the tremendous hype, combined with the festive period and an extended weekend will translate into amazing returns for the makers. In a nutshell, AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL has got ‘S-U-P-E-R-H-I-T’ written all over it.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil offers little in terms of story and fails to get the audience empathise or feel for the characters and events in the movie. What it does offer is brilliance in the name of Ranbir and Anushka, some awe-inspiring shots of Aishwarya and Fawad and a very beautiful canvas as it is shot at exotic locales of London and Paris.

Karan Johar has penned an ode to friendship. Like most of his films, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil too has everything superficial that is required to take his film ahead. Alas. It is not very predictable. But those grand dreams of grand love stories that Karan Johar has wooed us hopeless romantics with all along, doesn't work here. You can't immerse yourself in the story of Ayan and Alizeh. And that's not because of the leads' performances. The screenplay is knit well, but you can't invest yourself in the characters. The runtime also doesn't help much.

The characters are not card board cut outs from your drawing room so relativity on some levels. A few Bollywood cliches that are always significant to Karan Johar films. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is for lovers. Everyone who believes in the power of it and has been through a heartbreak or even close to it, will like this film.

Rahul, the boy, leaves Alizeh. Rahul, the man meets Saba (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). And that is what ADHM is all about — people and relationships coming of age. The chemistry of all the couples is palpable, so is the hurt. Love comes in all shapes and sizes — sometimes it comes with violins, sometimes it shows you the middle finger. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is the latter, maybe that is why it feels so real. Bollywood and music are Ayan and Alizeh’s redemption; ours too.

Led by a supremely good-looking quartet, this romantic quadrangle is the lovechild that would result if two films — Johar’s own friendship-meets-love saga Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and the Hollywood tearjerker A Fault In Our Stars — were to indulge in a torrid affair. So why would you give this love story a chance? The endearing performances from the lead cast.Kapoor steals the thunder from the two women. His anguish and his propensity to wail when he’s dumped makes him immensely lovable. Reserve this for a one-time watch. What’s not to love about a posh posse who are stupid and stubborn in love?

So here is the thing: If you like mushy romance, and going by the sniffs and sobs and claps from the cinema hall, you might enjoy the film. It is plain old Bollywood, full of colour, and Dr. Love kind of inspiration. At a point Alizeh tells Ayan, boys are like movies - you have superhits and time-passes; and interest in time-passes fails rapidly and they flop. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is time-pass - its appeal walks the thin line on how star-crossed and how mushy you are.
