 There’s a lot to admire in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya, but coherent narrative and compelling characters are not among its strengths. Mehra, who blurred the lines between past and present so skillfully in Rang De Basanti, has trouble pulling off the same tropes in Mirzya. The story doesn’t sit convincingly in the present day portions, and key triggers come off looking contrived. In the end Mirzya is a misfire, despite its staggering ambition and its remarkable technical achievements. I’m going with two out of five.

 But right from the get-go, Mirzya tells us it’s going to be more about setting the scene, as it cross-cuts in time — some sequences are as spectacular as anything we’ve seen recently — than giving us characters that will instantly grab us, and keep us with them. This problem plagues this lush, good-looking production right through, and makes it much less of a film than it could have been. Mirzya disappoints. Coming from all the talent that’s gathered together for this, that’s even more dispiriting.

 Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s direction is terribly dull. He is let down by an inane script and, therefore, all that stands out in his direction are his stylised shot takings and his over-indulgence. On the whole, Mirzya is a flop show and will meet with a disastrous fate at the box-office. It is like a lifeless as well as soulless film – dull, dry, drab and devoid of drama. It is all that a film with newcomers shouldn’t be!

 There is a significant Sanjay Leela Bhansali hangover to it all; try and imagine Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ramleela without the sexual chemistry. The script -- by the one and only Gulzar -- never lets us get close to, or care for, the characters who, in turn, come across selfish and juvenile. The story is paper-thin, and the reason we can't say much about the debut actors -- save for Saiyami's striking presence -- is that they are given bewilderingly little to do.

 this film is the Rang de Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag director's first full-on love story. Unfortunately, all these points of interest do not add up to much in the end because this tale of star-crossed lovers seems doomed from the very outset. That is true of the film as a whole. Mirzya is a colourful but tepid tableau populated by pretty but comatose marionettes that even Gulzar's poetry cannot stir to life.

 In the hands of the astute Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Rang De Basanti, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), this musical, which has a melodious score by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with additional tracks by Daler Mehndi, unfolds languidly in a Broadway-style format. Interspersing the present-day track with a period folklore, Mehra and Gulzar (credited with screenplay and lyrics) give viewers an engaging and lavish big-screen experience. If you are drawn to stories that are high on aesthetics with lyrical narratives, Mirzya is a portrait that deserves a long look.

 Although the plot of MIRZYA (rich girl-poor boy-disapproving parents) has been attempted umpteen times before in Bollywood, MIRZYA offers absolutely no novelty (in the form of twists and turns) in the film. The film, in totality, looks completely lifeless and falls flat on the face. On the whole, MIRZYA boasts of stunning visuals and good performances by the lead cast. However, it is marred by the treatment which is just not commercial in nature. At the Box-Office, the movie will struggle and will appeal only to a niche set of multiplex going audiences.

 Sadly the slim content doesn’t quite match the overloaded style, reducing the legendary Mirza-Sahiban legend into a barely sufferable yawn fest. Even at a running time of merely two hours-and-some minutes, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya, scripted by Gulzar no less, taxes your patience. To say that the storytelling lacks soul would be too simplistic. To me it looks like a classic case of love’s labour squandered.

 Despite the grandiosity of the the project, the director has failed to create a definitive connect with his audience with Mirzya. If you see Mirzya in parts, you may feel that it is a well-mounted movie, but in its entirety, a loose screenplay and direction make it a tedious watchGo for Mirzya if you must. Go if you love grand settings and are a sucker for tragic love stories! But do not expect miracles. The key is to keep your expectations at the lowest.

 Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya is visually spectacular, but it’s also spectacularly stupid when it comes to dealing with star-crossed lovers. Is tragedy and fatal injury the only way to legitimise true love? Based on the Punjabi folklore Mirza-Sahiba (think an Indian version of Romeo & Juliet, but with protagonists who are exponentially self-destructive.Watch Mirzya if you have a penchant for folk tales, poetry and mysticism. This grand love tragedy requires you to show a willingness to be transported to a land where lovers are skittish and crazy.
