 31st October had the chance to re-construct that ghastly day and show just how an event can spiral out of control, and just how easily hatred can be fanned and spread when the law and order machinery has been told to look the other way. But the film has nothing – neither narrative nor engaging characters—on offer.Das is hopelessly miscast. The others fare no better. Khan at least tries hard to look the part, but cannot rise above the sheer ineptness of this enterprise, which neither tells nor shows us anything we do not know.

 31st October is an account of that one day when the national capital burnt with its own rage after the then prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. 31st October is an important film, especially when many have gone scot-free in the anti-Sikh riots cases even after so many years. It’s going to be 32 years in 10 days.

 Written by producer Harry Sachdeva and inspired by true incidents, 31st October makes a fair fist of recreating one of the darkest days in the history of independent India. Directed by Marathi filmmaker Shivaji Lotan Patil, 31st October makes the right noises but is unable to direct and land its blows with the ferocity that could get the audience all pumped up. That is a pity because it does serve a clear and necessary purpose. Its message is unambiguous - justice still eludes the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and it is about time we as a nation did something about it.

 The first half of the film moves at a languid pace as the National Award-winning director showcases the bonhomie between the two communities before the assassination. The second half equally lacks the pace that should accompany a rescue mission. Khan, as an actor, doesn't have much to do as a mother whose mental toughness and the belief in God is put to the test. Vir Das does touch an emotional chord or two as the father of Sikh boys, who has to make a decision between staking their lives at the cost of their religious identities. Given these limitations, 31st October could be a one-time watch.

 31st October comes across a terribly shot, poorly written and shoddily acted film. Definitely skip! 31st October is a classic example of how to not make a film. It has problems in almost all of its departments and hence give this one a miss. 31st October fails to engage you at any level, least of all emotionally. I am going with a 1.5/5 for this.
