That Star Wars is a force to be reckoned with, is a given. It is a cinematic entity - a space opera - of such proportion that it has no parallel or comparison. But J.J. Abrams' biggest achievement here is that he has successfully managed the daunting task of forging the beginnings of a new chapter in this franchise's mythology. The storytelling is top notch. It's a carefully-crafted dance of nuance that balances a bit of everything. The set pieces are spectacular and then of course, there are the lightsaber battles... The Force is indeed, epic with this one. Don't miss it.

It is blatantly transparent filmmaking, and can be likened, in essence, to a new Salman Khan actioner where the core audience goes in with a checklist knowing they'll get some cheeky dialogue, some trite punchlines, an item song and one eventually shirtless fight scene. This is a film made to pleasure the fans and give them everything they wanted from the franchise. And it works. There is such universal love for the new Star Wars because it is, in too many ways, the old Star Wars.

Smartly paced and full of wit characteristic of the series, this film is a copybook exercise in storytelling. There are holes in the script and obvious McGuffins but while the film lasts, you are prepared to ignore them. As it ends, you are already waiting for its sequel and some answers. You want to see the character arc of people both old and new because Abrams has etched them in your memory. He has created a whole new world which may be derivative but hey, we will be more than happy to live in it.

The seventh film in what can best be termed a series, never mind all this talk of prequels and sequels, gets us back to the simplicity of that tale. A new quest has begun. The new troubadors are looking for the one who will save them all. And that keeps us going, even when ‘The Force Awakens’ dips : there are patches when the film starts to feel long. But, overall, hallelujah. Because we finally have the worthy successor of the film that we saw in 1983 ; Lucas’s empire, via Abrams, has struck back. The Force is back with us.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits all the right notes, while simultaneously raising the stakes and managing to satiate its most ardent fans. Abrams has managed to successfully combine the past with the present. With it, he has not just brought forward the canon for its older fans, but again, introduced it to a whole new generation.

So you may well ask, was it worth it? Was it really worth it to revive a franchise that inspired millions when its originality came out but shattered it all with prequels? The answer is in the building. Much will depend on where the new story arc proceeds, how the characters develop over time, and much more. But as of now, and as far as The Force Awakens is concerned, the wait was worthwhile and your anxieties will be rewarded. Go watch the movie. An adventure awaits in a galaxy far far away.
