The film holds true to its two main characters by not making concessions for either, just so to give us a hero and a villain. Both Edgerton and Bateman put in very good performances in a story that depends entirely on our inability to trust their characters. Hall really has to do little, but fall in.

What really drives the movie home are the excellent performances from the entire cast. Edgerton is delightfully strange, while Bateman is pretentious in an endearing kind of manner. The only wasted opportunity is the superb Allison Tollman from 'Fargo' is cast in a minor role that doesn't add anything to the story. But that's only a minor complaint in an otherwise awesome movie. As far as thrillers with smart thrills go, it doesn't get better than 'The Gift'.

Edgerton isn't above saying boo a couple of times but, as the dust settles and the plot's intricacies begin to show up, it's hard not to be lulled by the moody cinematography by Eduard Grau and the slowly escalating performances, all of which rely heavily on misleading the viewer, right from the start. This is because Edgerton is blessedly aware of what remains the single-most important thing about any gift: the surprise.

Bateman, Hall and Edgerton are in a word, fantastic. Cliches are studiously avoided in this bone-chilling little gem of a thriller. Instead, the goosebumps are provided by the twists, red herrings and a sense of unsettling uncertainty that is constant throughout. "The past is not done with you," Gordo cautions Simon in one scene. That neatly encapsulates the essence of the movie, as it simmers to a boiling climax. The Gift is uniformly intense without being heavy. Not for one second does it drag. If you enjoy psych-thrillers, there will be plenty to think about long after the end credits have rolled. Do not miss this one.

You must watch The Gift because this is a thriller that fans of the genre have been waiting for. You must watch it for the sincere performances of the cast. Bring an open mind to the movie hall though.

Synopsis:A young married couple, Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn Callen (Rebecca Hall), are living what appears to be a picture-perfect life. They relocate from Chicago to a suburban Los Angeles neighbourhood after Simon finds a new job outside the city. While out buying supplies for their new home, they run into Gordon "Gordo" Moseley (Joel Edgerton), a former high school classmate of Simon's who Simon claims to have completely forgotten about.
