Film critic-turned-filmmaker Karan Anshuman shows flashes of wit and potential in his occasionally clever nods to classic films. But saddled with a script that’s neither funny nor biting enough, he delivers a film that barely takes off.I’m going with a generous two out of five for Bangistan. Very little bang for your buck here.

Karan Anshuman’s direction is as weak as the drab script. Although he has made a satire, he is unable to evoke laughter. His making is terribly weak. On the whole, Bangistan is a flat satirical drama which fails to entertain and will, therefore, flop at the turnstiles.

The director, who wishes to depict the futility of war fought in the name of God and religion, stays on track. Despite the dry choice of subject, Bangistan makes valiant attempts to keep the humour alive during its two-hour running time.The characters of Riteish and Pulkit, who do not have a single mean bone in their bodies, are convincing as the Dumb and Dumber combo; blundering bumpkins who are a misfit on a terror journey.

Bangistan, for all the hoopla that it whips up, is a damp squib that does not deliver much bang for the buck. It is neither a blast nor a riot. It is more like an overpainted runaway truck that loses its wheels before the trip has well and truly begun. It careens out of control before you can say bang and hurtles scratchily down a path that hits a dead-end all too quickly. Stay out of the way.If you really desire to visit Krakow, pack your bags and spare yourself a Bangistan detour.

Bangistan spends most of its runtime cloyingly trying to establish itself as a satire, when the best it delivers is a haphazardly put together set-pieces and characters we just can’t be bothered about. Bangistan is eventually reduced to being a satire on the notion of a satire, falling tremendously short of a bang for your buck.

This is re-inforcement, and heavier than the let’s-all-be-friends-Geeta-ho-ya-Koran’ sequences. A jab at the ineffectiveness of stuff Made-In-China which fizzles rather than sparks, hits the spot, but there aren’t enough of these japes. The thin plot is stretched out over equally thin gags. Samrat is a tad too chirpy, and Deshmukh, who is usually capable of lifting anything he’s in, a bit too grim : a comedy needs more substance and consistency, especially something underpinned on a message that needs to be spread far and wide in these divisive times.

Unfortunately, the film doesn't live up to the super smart script. Also, it isn't really funny as it is supposed to be, except for some sequences, like the one where Hafeez and Praveen go to buy bombs in Poland. The film could have gone a notch or two higher, if Pulkit Samrat had gone slow on his histrionics and perhaps a tad more steady handed execution by the debut director. The script and screenplay deserved a better film.

‘Bangistan’ is aptly titled, in the sense that it induces desires to bang your head against a wall/ steel plate/ any available hard surface multiple times while watching it. Alternately, its sheer inanity & bad acting.I would advise not really spending on this ticket over the weekend, but if you have to, best to step inside the theatre in some sort of intoxication. Else, watch it at your own risk.

The problem with BANGISTAN is that it tries to be too many things at the same time. The film's promos promise a comedy however, the jokes soon start falling flat one after the other. Then the director suddenly decides to make a preachy film with a social message on religious harmony. On the whole, BANGISTAN is a pointless film that fails to make you laugh or entertain. Skip it.

Karan Anshuman who has criticised many films in his career ends up a big flop in the direction department. He has a great concept on paper with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani backing him up but he fails to deliver it on the big screen and whole lot of confusion in the story just messes up the beautiful concept he tried to show us through this film. Bangistan is not a great film and surely can be missed during this weekend but if you are a Riteish Deshmukh fan, then you can manage to sit for 2 hours in the theater and bare this bad film with a great performance by Riteish.

Bangistan’s ultimate undoing lies in its desperate lunge towards delivering a message in the climax. Here, Anshuman is at his most clueless, pausing the story to allow preachy banalities to take centre stage. It’s this bit that is really irksome but fittingly encapsulates Bangistan: the film refuses to take chances, to buck the rules, to soar beyond the cushy confines of unending mediocrity.
