Don’t bother too much with the plot of Pixels – the filmmakers certainly didn’t – in which a bunch of nerds, played by Adam Sandler, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage, are called upon by the President of the United States (Kevin James) to save the earth when aliens attack disguised as giant versions of 80s video game characters. It’s a slim premise, but Home Alone director Chris Columbus employs nifty special effects to liven up the proceedings. Sounds like fun? It is, but only sporadically. I’m going with two out of five. It’s an improvement on most of Sandler’s recent comedies. But that’s faint praise.

There was a hint of talent shown in 2009's 'Funny People' where Sandler actually played himself, lampooning his idiotic cash grabby persona. If that movie had made money he would probably have done more of those, but since it didn't we'll just have to keep enduring sequels to 'Grown Ups' and wasted opportunities like 'Pixels'. If you somehow do end up watching this movie, you could always go back home and play some Contra on your old Nintendo console, if you still have it. I just wish the warriors from that game came to life and set off to prevent Sandler from making any more movies.

The special effects are pretty cool, but the film is working nostalgia already thoroughly mined in movies (including the video-game-themed Wreck-It Ralph) and television (The Goldbergs and such). So it's not as original as it wants to be, despite having the able Chris Columbus in the director's chair. When the story shifts to New York for the climactic battle, the unlikely saviors might call to mind the "Ghostbusters" gang - another 1980s reference - and make you wish the film had the wry freshness the original installment of that franchise did.

Pixels tries your patience and offers no rewards for your persistence. It comes as a surprise that Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter films, could agree to be part of such rubbish. It could very well be the most unremarkable Hollywood film of the year; a complete waste of time.

First things first, Pixels is not a gross-out Adam Sandler comedy like the Grown Ups series or Jack and Jill, and there is no irritating Rob Schneider either, so that’s a huge plus. Adam Sandler himself is subdued this time, letting Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage take the spotlight. Though movie certainly has a lot of flaws, it is still a decent entertainer, especially when you are aware that it came from the Adam Sandler stable. Go with the least of expectations, and you won’t come out disappointed!

Despite the several loopholes, PIXELS makes for a simple fun watch. The visuals do play a big role in the film, adding a much needed novelty factor that coupled with the giant Pac-Man roaming on the streets is quite a sight. But what works best for the film is that PIXELS does not try to be anything more than just a fun time. On the whole, PIXELS is light, fun watch for the fans of the 80s arcade games. Don't expect anything spectacular from it though.

Because you had a rough week and you could use a few laughs. Because you used to play Pac-Man as a kid. Because you love Adam Sandler’s deadpan comedy. Because you know you’ll leave the theater with a smile on your face.
