The Bye Bye Man, aside from looking like a diseased Satanist, and ‘blessed’ with a name that would be more suited to a rather lackadaisical superhero, is perhaps one of the most embarrassing horror movie ghouls ever unleashed onto a screen. His only power, seemingly, is to infest unsuspecting prey and force them to recite his name.

So it’s undoubtedly underwhelming when you come face to face with The Bye Bye Man in Stacy Title’s latest film. With a scratched up, vein-y bald head and long gnarly fingers, this ghost is the poverty-stricken cousin to Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street), replete with a long black coat. How a film as ridiculous as The Bye Bye Man saw the light of day is beyond this writer. It lacks a strong narrative making things worse with an inept ghost and inferior actors. I couldn’t be more emphatic: do not watch The Bye Bye Man.

The Bye Bye Man starts out interestingly enough, but quickly jumps genres from college-horror to cheesy slasher film. It even half-heartedly tries to be a psychological thriller. But it fits neither of those sub-genres convincingly. It has a painfully unoriginal story, uses jump scares and sound effects to startle you, and above all else, just isn’t scary. It unfolds like a ghost story that you’ve heard a dozen times over bonfires. Add to that, a suspiciously Voldemort-like character (the Bye Bye Man is a pale, bald man whose name must not be uttered) If you’re in the mood to get scared this weekend, you’d have better luck surfing the news channels.
