Ungli Hindi Movie Review

There's some good old fashioned earnestness at the core of writer-director Rensil D'silva's Ungli, but the film is so steeped in naiveté and trades in such simplistic solutions, it's as if you're listening to a Class V moral science lesson. I'm going with two out of five for Ungli. It's well-intentioned but utterly muddled.

Everything seems to be so easy for the Ungli gang that it almost makes it appear that all of us, who have endured corrupt public servants for all these years, are idiots. The Ungli gang, which should have been a source of inspiration for the common man, fails to become inspirational due to the laidback attitude of the gang members. Rensil D’Silva’s direction is ordinary. The drama fails to inspire the audience, which was a must for a film like this. On the whole, Ungli lacks entertainment as well as inspirational value and will, therefore, flop miserably at the box-office.

Rensil D'Silva's plot is fast-paced, in spite of the many potholes it slips into. He strings the story like episodes, never allowing the drama to intensify. The outlaws have a motive, but their plans are way too improbable and flaky. The film points a finger at our society, and rightly so. But much of the film is pointless too. This work of Rensil's won't leave a lasting fingerprint.

Director Rensil D’Silva and dialogue writer Milap Zaveri team up to dish out an inane thriller that lacks originality as well as a solid plot.The worst part of Ungli is the way the climax unfolds.The vigilantes go about exposing the Dayals -- Mahesh Manjrekar and his son Rajat Kaul -- without the latter doing any ungli to repulse the four friends. The scene just begins and ends in a blink-and-you-miss moment! Ungli begins with a bang and that’s about it!

Ungli has a few attributes that you will not usually encounter in a Karan Johar production. It has no big stars, no elaborate song and dance set pieces and no major love story. But when a film is more interesting for what it isn't than for what it is, giving it a miss might be the most prudent option.

Ungli suffers from the curse of the second half. Whatever expectations the film built in the first half come crashing down post interval. Also the romance between Emraan and Kangana seems forced.The film has an interesting premise, but the second half and shoddy climax does Ungli to any chances of it leaving a lasting impression on us.

The script, screenplay and dialogues are just too juvenile! It's quite something that all this was cleared to be made into a film. The intention may have been good but the plot is silly and way to unrealistic! It's kind of clear that some of it was possibly salvaged in post production but quite a bit was beyond repair. So Ungli releases with all the loopholes at a theatre near you.

Ungli is a torture, to say the least, and you certainly deserve a better deal on how to spend your 90 minutes. So, does Ungli have even one redeeming factor? Actually, it has one. The only way you can enjoy this mindless film is by looking at the fun side of the 'witty punishments' the vigilante foursome unleashes on its victims. Ah yes, even the dialogues: They are so miserable that you just cannot the miss their fun side.

While the film establishes itself and its characters well within the first fifteen minutes, it loses the grip as it progresses. The first half of the film is effective and crisp, unlike the film's second half, which is stretched, thus, making the film bereft of entertainment value. The end climax scene will be difficult for certain audiences to digest. All in all, if you want to watch a film about rebelling against the corrupt system then UNGLI is a decent watch for this weekend.
