'The Fault in Our Stars', a love story between two dying teenagers, opens with a voiceover from its leading lady Shailene Woodley, promising that this isn't your typical melodrama that "sugarcoats" the hard bits or uses sappy music to tug at your heartstrings. For the most part, the film keeps that promise, using humor as a tool to address the harsh reality of its protagonists. But by the end, it's all reduced to a heap of unashamed mawkishness, leaving you struggling to fight back tears.I'm going with three out of five for The Fault in Our Stars. Take along some tissues and prepare to be manipulated.

The Fault in our stars Stays faithful to the book. What you see is what you get. Most love stories end with 'and they lived happily ever after'. But what happens when you may not live another day? Will you still fall in love, knowing your time is limited? If you like feel-good, escapist films, this one's not for you. The Fault in Our Stars is one of the most unpretentious tragic love stories told in a heart-warming manner. 'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened' pretty much sums up the story. The film is not about crying over what you may lose, but learning to live with what you do. After all, it's not the fear of death that makes you bitter, lack of love does.

While The Fault in Our Stars isn't the greatest book in the world, it is definitely well written. But the twisted sense of humour that the book contains becomes lost as the story transitions to celluloid. The film becomes monotonous, lacking any intensity or mystery; the supposedly star crossed lovers have an awkward, almost forced romance. The fault in The Fault in Our Stars is that it is so obsessed with bringing tears to your eyes that it forgets to bring substance to the table.

To anyone familiar with the book, the film is faithful to a fault from the dialogues to the clothes, the setting and the food, even while skipping over some of the unpleasant details including what would have been an awkward sex scene. “Some infinities are bigger than other infinities” is another favourite line of The Fault in Our Stars – the point being about time being what you make of it. The film may not stand that test of time but, something tells us, the line will. That may be infinite enough.

As any teenager will tell you, it's easy to be wannabe, but it takes something special to be truly quirky. As a film, The Fault in Our Stars lacks the directorial vision that would have translated the sweet, geeky charm of the book. The lines that read smoothly sound clumsy when spoken. The fault doesn't lie in the words but it takes a talented director and a superb cast to make the weird wonderful. Unfortunately, The Fault in Our Stars isn't so lucky.
