Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Hindi Movie Reviews

Directed by debutant Shashank Khaitan, the film wears its obsession with 'DDLJ' like a badge of honor, and offers a cheeky spin on that enduring love story.'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' comes peppered with smart dialogue, and filled with genuine affection for a cinematic blockbuster that it repeatedly references...but with flair. I'm going with three out of five. Watch it for Varun and Alia, who're crackling in it!

HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a quintessential Bollywood romance and ticks all the customary boxes that make a love story work. Yet, Shashank Khaitan makes sure the screenwriting incorporates several amusing and compelling episodes that steer clear of rusty formulas that we are used to watching in films of this genre. Shashank also steers clear of full-scale melodrama, loud and familiar masala and earsplitting background score, which could've seeped in naturally, given the genre of the film. He keeps it subtle, but makes sure the film wins you over. On the whole, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a beautifully textured love story that wins you over. There's no stopping this one from hitting the bull's eye. Sure-shot winner!

Shashank Khaitan has scripted a love story which midway turns into a family drama too. His story about a boy falling in love with a girl who is soon to be married, reminds of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Chalte Chalte but the similarity ends there. His screenplay is quite different. The first half is light and the emphasis is on the fun element. There are many scenes in which the audience ends up smiling or laughing. On the whole, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is an enjoyable entertainer and will keep everyone associated with it, as also the audience, very happy.

This is a lark, a goofy film where you know what's going to happen but where you enjoy watching it unfold. The strength of Khaitan's film lies in how it's not trying too hard, it's not trying at reinventing the wheel, and instead being honest to two characters who, it becomes gradually apparent, aren't who they said they were -- or, more importantly, they aren't who they thought they were. Filmi people end up living filmi lives. And sometimes we get to watch. Good on you, Shashank Khaitan. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is the kinda film Simran would have loved.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge for those that weren’t old enough to fully delight in the spectacle of SRK’s Raj wooing the parents of Kajol’s Simran against all odds nearly two decades ago.The retro rut that Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is stuck in might be good for a mildly diverting spot-the-DDLJ-allusions game. To be fair, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania does have some warm passages. But the overall package that it adds up to is about as appetizing as a bottle of beer gone flat. Recommended only for Bollywood junkies that love their froth served in receptacles that have no depth.

The strength of Shashank's debut film (tribute to 'DDLJ') is the performances and characters, whether it is Humpty-Kavya's cutesy, charming chemistry or the unbeatable boy-gang bonding with Shonty and Poplu. Unlike the characters, the story doesn't enthuse or grow beyond the original plot, but it's pinned with warm, delightful moments and laughable dialogues. HSKD has plenty of feel-good moments, but nothing that will leave you punch-drunk. For romantics who believe in their dils and their dulhaniyas - and the quintessential 'Ja, jee le apni zindagi'! - it's a sweet watch (beware the sugar rush!).

I smiled all the way till the half way point. After the interval, it becomes another story. Or shall we say, the same old, same old story, in which the plot, which had been going swimmingly along despite its stretches, begins to meander, and lose its way.The title tells us that the film is yet another ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ variant, so we can’t complain when the plot points start feeling the same, even if the details are different. How about this lot in a film that toplines a smooth-as-butter, not-weighed-under- a- DDLJ-tribute plot?

Kavya, Humpty and his two friends provide a lot of entertainment through this two hour ten minute film. The entire film is pacy and crisp, the duration is perfect and at no point are you bored. Debutant director Shashank Khaitan weaves this typical Indian story in an engaging plot and gets some fabulous performances from his actors. The film also has some good emotional moments. Predictable in most parts, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania entertains you from the first frame to the last one. It's a refreshing film.

Humpty Sharma uses a done-to-death story with wonderfully written script that makes you enjoy the predictive lot. Shashank has also added quite a few twists and turns to some of the crucial parts in DDLJ that will make you realize that this is a smart adaptation. There have been way too many movies on the lines of traditional girls not wanting to marry a stranger and yet going for it just for the sake of her family. This is one of the typical Dharma Productions full of wedding scenes, jazz and Punjabi thumka.

Rehashing DDLJ is venturing into the cult holy space and when the same doesn’t fructify even into half-good cinema, it’s a heart break. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania puts on no airs about giving novelty a miss but that isn’t the prime concern here. It’s a familiar film that makes you queasy because of a bad second hour. Blame my expectations but the film’s second half was a tirade that even gave me a headache. It wasn’t DDLJ butchered! I quite enjoyed the viridity of the first half but the second half went so miserably wrong. Even if the end didn’t make any sense with ‘Jaa Jee Le Apni Zindagi’ coming back to haunt you, I am glad it was over and I could go home and take an aspirin.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is deconstructed Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayange, the iconic 1995 blockbuster starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The ingredients from the original cult romance are all intact but director Shashank Khaitan has given a modern spin to the classic. Traditionalists may mock at his attempt, while the adventurous ones may embrace his tweaked (read trivialised) version The story is predictable, but this film is made watchable primarily because of Bhatt and Dhawan. This film may not go down as the biggest romance of 2014, but it’s not fair to write it off either.

Never has Bollywood seen a romance like this. Where a pretty girl leaves home in pursuit of a perfect wedding gown, and wins a handsome lover in the bargain. Yes, director Shashank Khaitan’s chaotic love story is more about finding the perfect ‘lehenga’ and less about love.Despite some good performances and a few wonderfully written lines, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ stops from being an endearing tale of love, because it blindly piggybacks on the classic without any heart or logic. It’s much ado about a lehenga!
