For a film about romance and love, Baar Baar Dekho is curiously lacking the messiness of real relationships, and trades in quick-fix solutions to complex personal issues. At 2 hours and 21 minutes it’s way too long, and never once succeeded in making me care if Jai and Diya would end up happily ever after.I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five. Baar Baar Dekho? No thanks, ek baar kaafi tha!

Baar Baar Dekho has been jointly produced by Excel Entertainment and Dharma Productions. The production houses are the high priests of a sub-genre I call posh people angst – basically stories about affluent, attractive people. But none of it is enough to sustain you through the length of this desperately flawed film. I’m going with two stars but keeping my faith in Nitya. That opening sequence holds promise of greater things.

On the whole, Baar Baar Dekho is too confusing a film to be understood and enjoyed by the public. Despite hit music and a good-looking lead pair, the film will meet with a poor fate at the box-office. Its poor initial is another minus point.

There are timeless love stories and then stories involving time travel. BBD belongs to the latter. Pleasant and fairly engaging but a tad tedious (like mathematics) to evoke a Baar Baar viewing. The foot-tapping kala chashma song in the end infuses that much required energy and zest into the film.

Maths genius Jay Varma (Sidharth Malhotra) has the gift of time travel, that miraculous thing which he can use to make things right between him and lady love Diya Kapoor (Katrina Kaif). What can go wrong with that most intriguing premise, even if we’ve seen similar stuff in About Time and The Time Traveller’s Wife? Quite a lot, actually, as it turns out: Baar Baar Dekho doesn’t have anything that can entice us into repeat viewings, let alone a single one, because the execution is flat and banal.

The problem with Baar Baar Dekho is that the story is frustrating and inane. And despite the fact that Hindi movie audiences are known to accept the most bizarre plots (like Rab Ne Bana De Jodi where a woman can't recognize her husband without glass and a moustache), this one is just not believable. What causes the time travel? Is it the thread? The pandit? Is it all a dream? You will be left grappling with these questions till half the film is over. All that going in the future, then past, then future again before finally coming back to the present makes BBD a repetitive bore.

Debutant director Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho is unlike any romantic yarn - I hesitate from giving it that loosely-used term the 'rom-com'. It is the ultimate what-if saga, narrated with a tender care and subdued splendour that makes every moment between the lead pair precious and gladdening.

Technically BBD is top-grade, but the to use the corporate argo, the content is a mind-bender. Mehra’s direction is serviceable, concentrating largely on the star value of Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif. The question is: can they act or just look glam? With all its ups and downs, then, is this time piece worth a multiplex visit? For a one-time watch, sure go ahead. Baar baar? Absolutely NO way.

The real problems in Mehra’s film starts with its wavering pace. While the film revolves around the concept of time travel, our clock seems to slow down as a viewer in the first half. Also, in general, the film’s long run time is slightly disappointing. Baar Baar Dekho is an ‘Ek Baar Dekho’ affair. A fresh pairing of good looking actors, good music and a commercial love story is the mainstay. I’ll go with a 2.5/5 for this romantic drama.

It will be my honour to be known not as Lokesh Dharmani, the movie reviewer. The one who called out the lack of depth in your film, the superficial treatment, the half-baked characters and a climax, one could see from a mile. I would rather be known as your grandfather…er …a pained viewer who spent 30 precious five dirhams on your movie. Your... dada…nana…actually no one. Just a viewer. And a reviewer.

The phase in which he’s an old, dejected soul looks terribly contrived. Even Kaif cannot pull off a fake grey wig and doesn’t age too well. Those phases are amateurish, but what keeps this love story afloat are the moments in which the couple try to work through their skewed work-life balance. It’s a problem that many modern-day couples face and the diatribe about ‘you don’t spend enough time with me’ hits close homeThis is no baar baar dekho, which means to watch again and again. Reserve this for a one-time watch.
