Margarita with a Straw Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

Despite some bumps in its final act, Margarita with a Straw strikes just the right tone. There are unexpected moments of humor, a coming-of age story that feels uncompromised, and a protagonist whose disability slowly fades away in the background as you begin to see her as a ‘normal’ person navigating the tricky journey of adolescence.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for Margarita with a Straw. Don’t miss the film, or you’ll miss what is likely one of the year’s strongest performances by a female actor.

People with disabilities are not ‘those becharas’. They are like you and me, in many essential ways. Laila is certainly not a ‘bechari’– that poor thing, to be pitied and patronized : she acknowledges her difficulties but doesn’t let them overwhelm her, as she trundles down the path, to find herself. For our cinema to acknowledge this is an achievement. I am raising a Margarita, as a toast. Now where’s that straw?

Margarita, With a Straw is a refreshingly, brutally honest film which ends up making the tiny mistake of adding an emotional, clichéd ending. Although certain scenes in the film could have been infinitely more powerful had the background score been stronger, one must laud Bose's use of deafening silence and Laila's wails in a scene at the hospital towards the end of the film.

The star cast is pretty good. A special mention has to be made of the ever dependable Revathi, who yet again delivers a convincing act. But of course, it is Kalki who takes your breath away with a superlative performance. Undoubtedly with one of the finest performances in recent years, Kalki lives and breathes Laila with such amazing ease and conviction that she stays in your head for a long time after you have left the theatre.

The film takes a dramatic turn from this point on as it tracks the evolution of the Laila-Khanum relationship and the consequent threat of the protagonist drifting away from her mom.Of the many surprises that Margarita, With A Straw has in its folds, none is as big as the virtuoso performance that Koechlin delivers. She is absolutely brilliant as Laila – so powerful and convincing that she completely sucks the audience into her complex world. The seasoned Revathy and the one-film-old Sayani Gupta, the two women who bear witness to Laila’s struggles to find her footing in life, provide perfect foils to the central performance.Do not pass up a sip of Margarita, With A Straw. It could be life-altering. If nothing else, it will soak you with its warmth.

The script somewhat over-diligently ticks every possible 'challenge' box, mixed marriages to a Pakistani-Bangladeshi visually affected lesbian. But that small quibble aside, MWAS is deeply moving, a philosophical film which makes you wonder if the body is a palace or prison - and evokes mothers to lovers who've cherished your soul.Try this Margarita - it's different.

The music (Mikey McCleary) is definitely one of the film's highlights. The film's music acts as a bridge to connect the audiences with the film. While the cinematography (Anne Misawa) exudes its own charm, the editing (Monisha R Baldawa) acts as a key factor in the film. On the whole, MARGARITA WITH A STRAW is decent film but it will struggle at the box-office as it caters to a very niche segment of the audience.

I will definitely recommend the film in spite of its loopholes. Including the glitches, it is still a better film than most Bollywood dramas you will watch. It is a slice of life film and Kalki Koechlin’s best.
