August: Osage County Movie Review

Ratings:4/5 Review By: Gavin Rasquinha Site:Times Of India
The film is full of angry exchanges and confrontations, mostly between the drugged-up Violet and Barbara, who gives as good as she gets. At regular intervals, various crazy secrets of the family emerge. Streep stands out as the unbalanced matriarch. Roberts too is someone to watch out for. In fact, there's not one weak link in the portrayals of this train-wreck of a family. The music by Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) helps add to the dramatic tension in the film, generously laced as it is with dark humour and plot twists aplenty.

Dysfunctional families on the big screen have been a big draw in the recent years (Breslin starrer Little Miss Sunshine comes to mind) when tackled with extreme care. While August Osage County starts off by giving you a small lump in the throat, it leaves one wondering in the end if you sympathise less with human failings when they are up in your face screaming for attention.

‘August Osage County’, based on a play of the same name, has a stellar cast. But the story feels static, and slurry. Violet’s sister and husband, her daughters, their men, and a grand-daughter fill up the large house with chatter. But as the days go by, and the shocking news of the husband’s end comes in, we are plunged in the midst of a family drama that could have been a better film, if it was better written.
