Aankhon Dekhi Hindi Movie Review

A number of political parties have started focusing on the aam aadmi. A number of movies too have been highlighting the life of a common man. Rajat Kapoor's ANKHON DEKHI mirrors the life of one such person beautifully! The multi-tasking Rajat Kapoor, who doubles up as the writer as well as director, truly deserves to be applauded for the way he has handled the film and its characters. He has really shown the world that one need not splurge multi-million dollars to make a convincing/decent film.On the whole, ANKHON DEKHI is indeed watchable!

Rajat Kapoor’s direction is lovely but the fact remains that the film is too philosophical and would appeal to a very thin section of the audience. Kapoor deserves kudos for recreating the atmosphere and ambience brilliantly and for extracting excellent work out of his actors. On the whole, Ankhon Dekhi is a well-made and well-enacted film but too philosophical and just too class-appealing. It will, therefore, not be able to score in the cinemas.

Rajat Kapoor's film is thought-provoking and as a storyteller, he touches a chord. His satirical take on how everyone conforms to the herd mentality is relevant and praise-worthy. It inspires us to unlock the shackles of mediocrity and standard behaviour - comprising of what's right and wrong, true or false. What however doesn't work for the film is the fact that it borders on abstract at regular intervals and lacks continuity, making a few scenes and conversations seem out-of-context. Nonetheless, the film is emotionally liberating. See it to believe it.

For all its existentialism crisis, Ankhon Dekhi’s heart lies in Kapoor’s affectionate depiction of humdrum living, the tender father-daughter relationship between Bauji and Rita (Maya Sarao), the unspoken attachment between him and his younger brother and the concerned anxiety of his rock solid wife. There are times when the narrative fumbles to accommodate another eccentric interruption or skip a few chapters unexplained to hastily progress. But Kapoor’s absorbing creation about an affable nonconformist and the repercussions of his behaviour on his family/fans conceal these faults.

What if you come across a man who will believe only what he sees with his own eyes, and negate everything he can’t? Will you call him eccentric and ignore him? Or humour him, and hear him out? Rajat Kapoor’s beautifully written and directed ‘Aankhon Dekhi’ breathes life into such a man, fills him up with not hot air, but a mix of foolishness and wisdom that is at once arresting, and inviting. He is fool, clown and man, all in one. He is us. I have seen it with my own eyes, and I can tell you that ‘Aankhon Dekhi’ is a fine , fine film.

The humour goes on till the very end with some hilarious dialogues giving it a complete Hrishikesh Mukherjee feel. The entertainment doesn't stop till the final scene and you never get bored, which is great considering there are no big stars, no item numbers and no foreign locations. Sometimes the best films are made out of simple stories and Aankhon Dekhi does that too. It touches your heart and makes you smile.

If Mithya was an irresistible dark comedy that held too many surprises for you, Ankhon Dekhi is just as predictable and yet so hard-to-let-go delicious. Magnificently conceptualized, it is eventually Rajat Kapoor’s intriguing vision and his ability to keep it consistently engaging all through its screen time, is what makes this offering a decadent watch that must be savored.
