Elysium English Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Renuka Vyvahare Site:Times Of India (TOI)
Neill Blomkamp, in his inimitable style, gives us a dark science fiction thriller that's relevant to present-day society and existing social and economic inequality. No matter how gripping, Elysium is no match for Blomkamp's hard-hitting District 9. However, what works in the film's favour is the director's satirical intent. The premise is thought-provoking with the whole 'degradation of human life' theme deeply affecting your psyche. Aerial shots of over-populated earth might even remind you of Mumbai. Elysium is like a warning of a disturbing future that we can all see coming. Note: You may not like this film if you prefer sci-fi movies with escapist themes.

District 9 was a landmark film when it came to weaving a really strong story line into a futuristic setting that was emotional and heart breaking at the same time. Elysium has shades of D9 but the canvass is much bigger than anything Blomkamp has attempted. So if larger than life is your thing, Elysium won’t disappoint. Special effects though minimal impress in the right places. Elysium is a big gun that aims and fires but misses its target by a mile.

All those who love the sci-fi genre will find the film entertaining, yet they will leave the theater with a sense of dissatisfaction as we haven’t seen a classic piece of work in that genre for a long time. In terms of comparison with previous movies released this year, it is one of the best so far, but genuinely could have been better if Elysium would have manged to escape the constraints of convention.
