 But as it turns out Naam Shabana – never mind how you describe it; as a prequel, a spin-off, or an origin story – is a plodding bore of a film.It’s a shame because there’s so much potential here. What there isn’t, unfortunately, is an adequately fleshed out plot. The problem at the root of this film is that it literally offers nothing new, other than the idea of a woman who knows her way around a fight. The plot is predictable from the word go, and yet it unfolds over an excruciating two-and-a-half hours.

 Taapsee is terrific in #NaamShabana... But the film lacks the bite and punch of #Baby. Engaging in parts only... Writing plays spoilsport...#NaamShabana lacks the thrill + nail-biting finale of #Baby. Manoj Bajpayee, Prithviraj are super. Akshay interval point intro fantastic..NaamShabana could've been an edge of the seat thriller, but misses the bus... Lack of major releases might help at BO.

 Had Naam Shabana been focused more on the job doled out to the female protagonist than on her motivations beyond the personal and professional pale, it might have whipped up some genuine steam. The film is far too intent on underlining the centrality of country and honour to be able to bring into sharper relief the life and strife of a female spy. Naam Shabana, for all its avowed aspirations, it rarely ventures beyond the trite and tested. Watch it only if standard-fare action dramas do not put you off.

 Blame this prequel on the media. Most critics who saw Neeraj Pandey’s action-drama, Baby (2015) praised agent, Shabana’s cameo in it. Her brisk action-sequence in a Kathmandu hotel room, when accompanying Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar) on a mission, provided the required adrenaline-rush. Taking the praise to their heart, this time around, the makers dedicated 148 mins, (really?) to the spunky agent. Sorry, but the running time is the film’s first inherent flaw. Frankly, Shabana shone in Baby because she was in a cameo. Someone missed the point, guys.

 What does come as a surprise, however, is just how much of a drag the film is. Except for a few stray sequences in which the limber Taapsee Pannu goes after the bad guys, and the ones in which co-star Akshay Kumar moves in to demonstrate how the big boys do it, there is nothing either novel or interesting about the film.

 Watch Naam Shabana purely for Taapsee Pannu’s fine performance and Akshay Kumar’s enjoyable cameo, and also if you loved Baby too much. Just don’t go into theatre expecting another quality stuff like Baby, even if the movie forces us to draw comparisons.

 Pandey sticks to the tropes to keep audiences involved if not consistently interested in the proceedings. But Nair's interpretation dilutes Pandey's vision to some extent as the film could've done better if it were a bit more tense and tighter.So, if you're up for a flick about a lady agent kicking serious behinds, this could float your boat. Even otherwise, it's worth a watch.

 Pandey has written this prequel, split into two totally separate films. And to be fair when the movie does cut to the chase eventually, to chase down the villain, some of the thrills do kick in. Sadly you've polished off your popcorn tub already, taking in the corniness until that point

 Devoid of a smidgen of slickness, a must for thrillers, the outcome is like being held captive in a torture chamber, aggravated by the pounding background music, tacky set décor, the usual aerial shots, papyrus-thin plot and humdrum direction.For the rest of the way, Bollywood’s retort to the genre of Bondish and Bourne Ultimatumish movies, is a pain. Pure brain drain.

 On the whole, NAAM SHABANA is a well-made thriller with two contrasting storylines in the film’s two halves playing the spoilsport. However, given the strong brand value of BABY, decent interest quotient and lack of opposition at the Box-Office, will work out to be a huge advantage for the film. At the Box-Office, it will do decent to good business.
