Badrinath Ki Dulhania isn’t merely interested in being a breezy rom-com. Admirably, it’s also a critique on the dowry system, and makes a strong case for a woman’s right to choose career over marriage. Unfortunately some of this is communicated in a tone that’s too heavy-handed, and as a result you’re easily bored. Badrinath Ki Dulhania has its heart in the right place, but its writing is often clumsy. There is a lot to appreciate here, but it’s also overlong and made me restless. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five.

Shashank clearly establishes that Vaidehi is a hero – she takes tough decisions in the pursuit of her dreams. But he also gives us a hero who learns the true definition of masculinity. It isn’t the toxic aggression that his overbearing father preaches. It’s the strength to respect her choices. Of course the story stays simplistic and sunny – when Vaidehi breaks the rules, there are disturbing threats of violence but the darkness dispels quickly. Which is not a bad thing. Think of Badrinath ki Dulhania as a dose of feminism-lite. I was smiling through the film.

On the whole, Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a hit. It has entertainment for the masses and the classes, for the young and the old, for the girls and the guys, for the big as well as the small centres and for the multiplex audience as well as for the single-screen cinema audience. It will keep the producers, distributors and exhibitors smiling from ear to ear.

The film's first half might be set in small towns, but there is no earthiness or texture. And while the idea of toppling the patriarchy is admirable, Badrinath Ki Dulhania aims these guns too literally: every single father in this film is a gruff monolith incapable of conversation, and must thus be eventually defied. It is a film, in short, with daddy issues. What makes it work, really, is the intent and the two principal actors.

Jhansi and Kota might not derive any benefits from being at the heart of this flimsy film. But Frankfinn Academy and Singapore's Silk Air stand a good chance. Both entities are given heightened play in Badrinath Ki Dulhania. As for the film itself, it runs into an air-pocket of mediocrity and never finds its way out of it. Hop aboard only if you have no option.

Shashank Khaitan (after having directed HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA) springs up yet another winner in the form of BADRINATH KI DULHANIA, a film that sees him improved immensely as compared to his last film.On the whole, BADRINATH KI DULHANIA is a beautifully textured love story and an enjoyable entertainer that wins you over and keeps you hooked right till the end. At the Box-Office, it will be a sure-shot success. Do not miss it.

Through Vaidehi, the movie checks all the important boxes: gender issues, feminism, consent, etc. But the story is treated so stylistically (with elaborate song sequences and flashbacks and cinematic moments) that it loses heat. The runtime doesn’t help either. This is a story with an obvious climax, so sitting through two and a half hours to find out what you already know might get uncomfortable. But the breezy vibe of the movie and back-to-back hilarious lines should get you through it.

The post-interval part is marred by a huge contrivance and turns into a bit of a meander, and there are some portions which are bunged in as set-pieces, instead of moving organic parts. A couple of times, the film’s let’s hear-it-for-the-ladies comes off as simplistic, but overall, the film works as a flavoursome romance with a pair which grows into each other, and with each other. I’m happy to cheer any film which tacks on the word ‘respect’ with ‘love’, and does a take-down of patriarchy, even if it’s all broad brush-stroked.

The film has a good blend of comedy and drama. Despite a comic touch to his role, Varun manages to make you feel for his character. This is a movie where Dhawan Jr is the most endearing. And yes, the Tamma Tamma song is placed at the perfect point, just before the filmmaker is about to lose out interest that is.The movie could have been edited better. The climax is almost like the makers were in a hurry to sum up their film. It’s shoddy and a very strong message gets lost.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is light, entertaining and likeable. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt prove that on screen chemistry can be enough sometimes to keep you engaged in an average plot with a predictable narrative.

Badrinath… stretches post interval and the much-awaited Tamma Tamma Loge song appears towards the end. The film twists towards the end when Badri’s character changes from being totally patriarchal to understanding the challenges of women and then, accosting his father. It ends as being idealistic but takes forward the cause it espouses. Varun is endearing and earnest and shines in the role matching it with Alia’s luminous presence and histrionics. Succinctly put, it is a Varun Dhawan film and adds to his repertoire of memorable roles.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania‘s rom-com with a message format is likable. Alia-Varun once again show, they are the new-age Raj-Simran Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a suitable watch for those who enjoy Bollywood rom-coms. It will make up for a perfect breezy watch for the weekend.

The first half of the film moves at a brisk pace, while the second half gets bogged down by an overly long stretch about Vaidehi’s profession as an air hostess. However, it’s the chemistry between the lead pair is what keeps you hooked to this romance. But just like a big fat Indian wedding, there’s a bit of colour, dance, music and loads of drama thrown into Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Take the plunge with Dhawan and Bhatt. Their combined acting skills and comic timing will make it an enjoyable affair.
