Budhia Singh – Born to Run is positioned as a biopic of the world’s youngest marathon runner, but it’s as much an indictment of Indian bureaucracy and petty politics as it is true story of the five-year-old tyke whose achievements it celebrates. Winner of the National Award for Best Children’s Film earlier this year (under its original title, Duronto), .I’m going with three out of five for Budhia Singh – Born to Run. It’s predictably told but heartfelt…and thought-provoking to boot. Not a bad way to spend two hours.

Padhi’s narrative works best when it focuses on the relationship between Biranchi and Budhia. Mayur is an absolute natural. What’s less interesting is the whirlwind that Budhia’s talent ignited. Biranchi’s loving but often fraught relationship with his wife is nicely etched but the other characters aren’t fleshed out enough  After some time, the repeated visuals of various marathons become, quite literally, a slog. I also felt like I never really got enough insight into Budhia’s head – he’s rebellious and mischievous and he really wants a red bicycle. But what drives Budhia to run and run and run? We never find out.

A 5-year-old poor kid wants to run because it can fetch him new shoes, or a new cycle. An ambitious but cynical coach pushes the child to his limits because he is convinced the boy is talented. The kid succeeds against all odds, and that becomes the most defining moment of his life: because it will one day end up in his beloved coach’s murder.

Can a movie change a life? After watching Budhia Singh: Born To Run, you wish for a miracle. Or anything that can help a young prodigy unlock his enormous potential. The ‘real’ Budhia’s career has been stuck in bureaucratic sloth and carelessness. Can the film shine a spotlight on his plight and pull him back on track for the long haul?

On the whole, BUDHIA SINGH - BORN TO RUN, despite winning a national award and being a good film, has less awareness due to poor publicity and lesser star value. Due to this, BUDHIA SINGH - BORN TO RUN will face an uphill task at the box office. Overall, the film will have to rely heavily on word of mouth and strong audience support to post good box office figures. But if you are in the mood to watch an inspirational tale of human spirit, endurance and sacrifice, do watch this one.

Formerly titled Duronto (having few stops), Budhia Singh – Born To Run is certainly worth a watch. It is moving, exciting and sad all rolled into one. If you don’t know Budhia Singh, you must watch this! The story of Odisha’s wonder boy and his coach Biranchi Das needs to be heard. As a sports drama or a biopic, this one hits the right nerve.

The sheer power of the story that Padhi tells serves to paper over the minor chinks in the tale. The film celebrates an improbable dream and mourns its untimely death, both with infectious passion and ends with a fervent appeal on a behalf of a social media campaign to put Budhia back in his running shoes. Not a bad idea at all. Overall, Budhia Singh - Born to Run is worth running all the way to the nearest multiplex for.

Today, Budhia is suffering as he wages a lone battle against the absurd ban on the one thing that he loves to do – run – and this film from the flag off to the finish line does a fine job of portraying his predicament on screen. Go for it because this is a story that needs to be told and it hasn’t been photoshopped for convenience!

Extraordinary in ever sense, this is a story that had to be told. Just as every Budhia needs a Biranchi Das, every story of an unsung hero needs a filmmaker with a dispassionate vision. "Budhia Singh - Born To Run" should be granted a tax exemption in every Indian state.
