NH10 Movie Review by Top Critics

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

'NH10', directed by Navdeep Singh, is about a road trip that goes horribly wrong when a young married couple crosses paths with a gang of ruthless killers on the national highway. It's a standard genre movie on the surface, and Singh does a good job of creating edge-of-the-seat tension. But he also layers the narrative with rich subtext, delivering so much more than your average thriller.I'm going with three-and-a-half out of five for 'NH10'. It's often terrifying on this highway, but you'll be glad you were there for the ride.

It's easy to hate NH10 while watching it because it's one of the most terrifying Hindi films ever - while simultaneously, you love its brilliance. The film's story, apparently inspired by Eden Lake, is truly taut, no moment letting you relax, no layer - like Meera's vulnerability against both Arjun's ego and the vicious gang - comforting. NH10 is a relentless thriller you wish you could see with your eyes closed - because truly, as its song goes, chill gaye naina.

But the suspension of disbelief is difficult when it comes to the leading lady, who, in her zeal to become a Killi Billi, throws the credibility switch. It’s not that Sharma, who has also produced the film, is not trying hard. She is, and up to a point, she is in fine fettle. But at the point when she turns from flee to fight, I stopped believing.

avdeep Singh’s new film is a tough film to stomach, a frightening and disturbing beast, and because it should be just that brutal, given how loyally it adheres to slasher/thriller genre conventions. NH10 is more a pure horror film than any of its companions in the slasher genre simply because we believe what we want to, and it feeds our fears.

NH10 centres on an innocuous road trip that turns into a nightmare for a well-heeled Gurgaon couple. The film, however, holds its path right down to the shocking final moments.NH10 is an adventurous Bollywood film that breaks the shackles of convention and is none the worse for it. Eminently watchable.

What ultimately matters is NH10, even in its inspired form, is a reality we both live and deny. Are men the protectors? Can women protect themselves? Are men the enemy? Are women the enemy? Will we ever get past caste, creed and gender? Are cities worse or villages? Is India too convoluted? Is anyone safe? NH10 doesn’t provide easy answers.

Anushka Sharma is the central thread of NH10, and she does a satisfactory job, but too much drama in the second half stops her from hitting the bull’s eye. Navdeep Singh nails it in the first half, but the second half lacks the same fluidity and penetration power. NH10 displays a great potential and then fails to capitalise on it.

On the whole, NH10 is a wonderfully made film with an outstanding performance by Anushka Sharma. It will be well appreciatedby an intelligent audience that's gunning for women safety and empowerment. The sound cinematic credentials and gripping narrative is the high point of the film. But, as mentioned earlier, the glorification of violence isn't easy to stomach. You need to be really motivated to absorb it. This National Highway has its shares of potholes, but, it is a must visit. Do go the NH10 way!

If one has to point out drawbacks, some of the twists in the story seem too convenient and the second half dips a wee bit in energy as compared to the first half. But, overall, the choice of locations, the performances and the brutally honest take on a story that needed to be told, makes this film a hell of a scary ride but absolutely worth it. Don't miss it.

NH10 is entertaining and creepy for most parts. It’s an example for perfect casting too. Darshan Kumar as the rod-toting brute, Sharma as the vulnerable woman teetering on the edge of sanity and Bhoopalam as her sensitive partner fits right in. It’s also devoid of melodrama, making NH10 an enjoyable ride.

The greatness of how a woman can take on a society full of men who want to kill her, molest her or even ask her to not look at them in the eye. Hence proved – Hell hath no fury like a woman! Watch NH10 for its bare truths and gruesome elements. It is time that every girl awakens a Meera within her.
