Ultimately, it’s Kangana Ranaut who makes you root for Rani from the word go. The best way to describe her fabulous performance is by confessing that I forgot I was watching Kangana. It’s a raw, nuanced, delicately comical performance, and Bahl rightfully builds his film around his fearless, quirky heroine.I’m going with four out of five for Queen. It’s an extraordinary journey with a Rani who will stay in your heart.

QUEEN is about a shy and timid girl who travels to Paris and Amsterdam for her honeymoon all alone, when her beau calls off the wedding at the last minute. A quirky concept, yes. But this coming of age story is indeed enjoyable, despite the hiccups. On the whole, QUEEN reinvents the genre with its non-formulaic screenplay and skilled direction. A charming little film, this one's made with heart and feeling and it shows. Absolutely recommended!

Queen is about the metamorphosis of Rani. Director Vikas Bahl, who has also co-written this delightful story, doesn’t expend too much energy on plot. Nothing much happens. Instead he creates moments, which slowly mold and reshape Rani into a woman with a smile and a spine Ultimately Queen is Kangana’s triumph. I left the theater thinking about Rani and how the rest of her life would pan out. It’s not often you do that with a Bollywood character. I’m going with three and a half stars.

On the whole, Kangana Ranaut’s performance in Queen overpowers the film itself. The film will, therefore, not be able to realise its full potential. It will do ordinary business because in centres other than the big cities, the audience looks for excitement in drama more than performance of the cast. Business in cities will definitely be good despite very poor opening as the word of mouth for Kangana’s acting will be supremely positive.

Kangana Ranaut's performance is outstanding. Whether she's crestfallen or ecstatic, selling golgappas or naively buying sex-toys, hiding her infatuation for an Italian restaurateur or showing deep dejection about her wimpy beau Vijya (Rajkummar Rao), she's a class act. Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao lend good support. But this film belongs to its director Vikas Bahl.

This is a story of girl meets girl, and you should know upfront that this is not a love story. Unless, of course, we refer to the relationship between the audience and the protagonist. Because I dare you to watch Queen and not fall in love with the character. Queen is a good entertainer, sure, but, more critically, it is a showcase for an actress poised to reign. This is one of those monumental moments when you feel the movies shift, and nothing remains the same. I've seen the future, baby, and it's Kangana.

Bahl’s second directorial venture is a delight: his first, ‘Chillar Party’, had some spark, but nothing prepared me for this. The story, which could easily have slipped into mush, stays free of drippy sentimentality, barring one or two raised-violin scenes. And Rani is well on her way to learning the meaning of friendship and freedom in a land far away from home, where girls have to live with the word ‘allowed’ .

This is a film that is no less tangy than the gol gappas that Rajouri Garden girl Rani Mehra rustles up in an Italian pizzeria in faraway Amsterdam. The bright and breezy Queen does not require even “two minutes”  to work its magic. It hits its straps from the very outset. Queen is spicy, balmy and uplifting. Like good gol gappas, it leaves a zesty aftertaste that lingers on until long after the ride has ended. It warms the heart and tickles the funny bone with equal force.

Director Vikas Bahl (Chillar Party) has crafted one of the better coming-of-age tales in recent times. Expanding on the admirable 2014 motto of Women's Empowerment, Queen's chief strength lies in its authenticity and littler details, right down to the fading henna patterns on Rani's hands.Queen almost defies its bloated running time. I say 'almost' because one too many moments of enlightenment are piled on towards the end, none of which are surprising. This is instantly forgiven though, as soon as some very innovative end credits begin to roll.

The delightful film tells a simple story: that of a young Indian girl from Rajouri Garden in New Delhi, dumped by her fiance two days before her wedding, who chooses to go on the prebooked honeymoon. And that is the film's beauty: its pauses, its silences, its not saying too much when it can say less.  Cocoon-like, Vikas Bahl allows the woman to emerge from the turmoil, in her own way, on her own terms, and that is uniquely a mastery of his own.

Except that I can see women audience relating more to this. It's not really a chick flick but yes, the actress is the protagonist here, and those films are 'generally' not considered commercially viable. But that is such a small non-problem when this movie gets everything else so right.Queen is irresistible. Highly recommended. A must-see film. You will leave the theatre with your heart humming happily.

There are two or three things that seem to not be in sync with the rest of the film’s pitch perfect balance. A few times English lines from one character are repeated (read: spoonfed) in Hindi by another character. Strangely there is not one but two endings in the film, and the second one seems shoehorned and unnecessary, because the first one does everything and does so perfectly. But all these are just small complaints, not jarring enough to make one dislike the film. So go watch it.

Have you ever watched a film that has you smile all through its run time, even when a silent tear drops down your face? Queen does that for me. Vikas Bahl eloquently traps the gradual transformation of Rani’s middle class terminology into a self assured laconic ‘thank you’. It could have been very forgettable and limp but Kangana’s poise pulls through the film marvellously. Queen is a winner and does it all in a regal style almost to give most film lovers a cinematic orgasm of sorts. Savor this one!
