On the whole, LAKSHMI is a heart-rending tale that ought to be told. It's a film that's sure to jolt you, take you out of your comfort zone, set you thinking about the plight of millions of kids pushed into the flesh trade. Sure, a number of images and instances in the movie are disturbing and distressing, but certain issues need to be addressed. Additionally, the message Nagesh Kukunoor conveys in LAKSHMI reverberates much after the screening has concluded.

Kukunoor's 'Lakshmi', based on a harrowing true story, is a thought-provoking, disturbing film told with heartbreaking detail and a narrative that is so raw and ruthlessly realistic, it often becomes repulsive. The repeat scenes of sexual exploitation are gut-wrenching. Several movies and documentaries have been filmed on this subject, what makes this special is the steadfast resolve of a 14-year-old to fight social demons. We wish Kukunoor had focused more on her spirit and triumph - our experience would've been more fulfilling, less overbearing. Lakshmi's story makes your heart bleed. If you have the courage, watch it.

Lakshmi is a powerfully told inspirational tale that doesn’t brush the brutal reality of sexual exploitation under the rug. It pulls out uncomfortable home truths. There are portions of the narrative in the brothel involving Kukunoor and Shefali as the pimp and the madame that get unbearably violent and gruesome. Both come up with superlative fearless performances. Lakshmi is not a film for the weak hearted and the squeamish. Isn’t the same true of life too?

It is difficult to watch Lakshmi. It gives you a headache inside the theatre. It gives you nightmares when you go home. Take a box of tissues along for this one. It isn’t so much the visuals as it is the soundtrack will reduce you to tears. Yet, films like Lakshmi are the need of the hour. The worst part of Lakshmi is that it isn’t just a story. When you come out of it, you will forever be plagued by the knowledge that evil does exist in this world and we, as a society, are only enabling it.

A dramatised story of a 14 year old girl coaxed into prostitution in Hyderabad, this is a difficult and uncomfortable film to watch. Kukunoor achieves what he strives for; his film is brutally honest in its simplicity. Much of young Lakshmi's graphic ordeal is suggestive, complete with how her body struggles to accept abuse every night. Lakshmi is not without its flaws; the sort of topical theme Madhur Bhandarkar would have chosen at his prime. It makes you cringe for important reasons though, and must be watched for its relentless pursuit of relevance and authenticity.

Kukunoor opts for a documentary-style approach which offers little new insight about the plight of the women thrown into prostitution. The film slips in the second half when Lakshmi takes the perpetrators to court and doesn't buck under the pressure as she shares details about her ordeal. While the film avoids mawkish courtroom theatrics, the scenes are so listless and shoddily put together that they wear viewers out than draw a strong emotional response.

Nagesh Kukunoor has mustered up the guts to make a film that will shock you to the extent of feeling repulsed by it. And still it is a story that is so deeply rooted in facts and tackled with a coarse realism that it must be heard. Lakshmi is a film that will have you on the edge of your seats, unsettling you with its disturbing subject matter, pushing you to run out of the film and yet the story is so powerful that it will adhere you to it. There are no two ways about the fact that it is a must watch film and Kukunoor has toppled all his previous works by making a film which is yet abhorrent and yet every bit courageous.
