Ultimately, Star Trek Beyond is an entertaining adventure peppered with funny moments, and steeped in nostalgia. A tribute to the late Leonard Nemoy is genuinely moving, and plot holes aside this tale of comradeship feels old-fashioned in a good way.I’m going with three out of five. It doesn’t go boldly where few have gone before, but you’ll be happy to take this journey.

Too bad that the lengthy, noisy, excessive climax and a bizarre explanation for Krall’s bad behaviour hurls Star Trek Beyond, right into their midst.Still, as the saying goes, well begun is half done.

To sum things up, get ready for some interesting side adventures, snappy dialogues, brilliant CGI, an entertaining score (the retro hit by Beastie Boys' Sabotage) and also a relationship angle, for good measure. The kind of blend that is signature JJ Abrams (he has a co-producer credit). Then there's the enemy leader Krall (Elba) who is bad to the bone no doubt, but without being over-the-top. A few logical fallacies aside, this one's really enjoyable.

But for all its successes, Star Trek Beyond falls into the same trap that consumed its predecessors. The villain, Krall, isn’t as daunting as the movie thinks he is. Like Nero in the 2009 movie and Khan in Into Darkness (although in his case, it was the hoopla around Cumberbatch that was to blame and not, necessarily, the character) Krall… is underwhelming. He breathes like Darth Vader and sounds like the Commandant from Beasts of no Nation, and burdened with the frankly Scooby Doo-esque decision to hide Idris Elba’s expressive face behind a mask – he is just a man who gets lost in space.
