Ramaiya Vastavaiya  Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Taran Adarsh Site:BollywoodHungama
In reality, RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA is the remake of Prabhu Dheva's directorial debut NUVVOSTANANTE NENODDANTANA.RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA may bear similarities with above named movies, but the drama unfurls way too differently here. Sure, there are deja vu moments, despite the germ of thought being analogous, but Prabhu and screenplay writer Shiraz Ahmed ensure that they pack several novel and mass-friendly punches, introduce new characters, besides packaging it well enough for the entertainment-seeking spectator to lap it up. On the whole, RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA is a simplistic love story narrated competently. Besides, the chemistry between the lead actors, the gripping second hour and of course, the Hit musical score should contribute to its triumph. Recommended!

the movie is acutely self-aware of what it's aspiring for. There's not an iota of realism or truth to be found. There's no substitute for being original. And RV is merely a substitute for other once-upon-a-time original films. It has now been remade in five languages. And to be fair, the flow is breezy and not jarring once you get into the world. The slapstick occasionally works and a most interesting experiment (that may have been necessitated while shooting): Haasan doesn't say more than 5 words in the second half to Kumar despite being on screen with him for the most of it. +1.

The film (remake of Prabhudheva's debut directorial Telugu film) isn't ripe with any newness - in story or direction. In fact, it discernibly replants stories from the 80's-90's era (remember: 'Maine Pyar Kiya', 'Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya'), with cliches, a banal plot, an field-full of supporting cast (of which Kapoor and Khanna are underused but good) and a budding lead pair. This one's like a pretty field decked up in celebration, but with no real harvest to show.

If the plot reeks of Bollywood of the 1980s, it isn’t surprising at all: Ramaiya Vastavaiya, Prabhu Deva’s remake of his debut Telugu hit, owes its primary inspiration to Maine Pyar Kiya. Yes, this wine is that stale. No wonder it stinks. Nothing in Prabhu Deva’s directorial style suggests that he is interested in the least in imparting a fresh coat of paint to this old constructWatch Ramaiya Vastavaiya only if you have the stomach for unbridled lunacy.

IEarly on in the film, one character tells another: "Kya ghisi-piti baatein kar rahe ho, kuch naya kaho na" (Why are you saying the same old things, say something new). It should have been the tagline of Ramaiya Vastavaiya, the most shopworn, tired film I have seen in a while. There really is nothing more to say other than I really felt each minute of the nearly three hours hang like lead.

Prabhu Deva mixes these yesteryear ingredients to dish out a formulaic film with melodious tunes and some enjoyable light moments. The storyline is very reminiscent of the 1998 Salman-Kajol starrer Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya.Also the climax with the thunder claps and throwback background sound effects falls flat. There isn’t enough classic courting or romantic scenes between the leads. For a greater duration they are reduced to playing the clichéd ‘love me-hate me’ cat and mouse game. To watch or not to:If old school, loud and over-dramatic romance is your thing, then Ramaiya Vastavaiya is the ticket to buy!

What’s Good: Designed to be an obsessive crowd pleaser this film doesn’t leave any stone unturned to be obviously funny! What’s Bad: The film tries too hard to be funny, loud and ridiculous, not to mention cliched! Watch or Not?: Ramaiya Vastavaiya is for people who have a taste in juvenile comedy. This Prabhudeva directorial works unabashedly on regular formula of a hero, a heroine and her staunch elder brother. Expect an average entertainer, this one is a stylishly silly, regular masala rom-com that expects you to leave your brains at home!

The quintessential Bollywood fairytale is painfully predictable and excessively indulgent. But, unlike the names we’ve mentioned earlier, ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ wouldn’t make it in the same league only because there’s no soul in this love story. We suggest you wait for telly viewing or rent out the DVD, because it allows you to switch channels or turn it off in case of any allergic reaction. If nothing, it’d work out cost-efficient.
