Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Movie Review

Like all rom-coms, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI sparkles with romance, merriment and heartache, is brightly glossy and boasts of crackling chemistry between its lead actors, but Ayan makes sure the heady concoction never waters down. The best part is, he never borrows from romantic cliches that most love stories depend upon and that, in my opinion, is this film's biggest strength. Expect no unwanted melodrama, no unwelcome characters, no earsplitting background music to accentuate the proceedings...  On the whole, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is a revitalizing take on romance and relationships. A wonderful cinematic experience, this one should strike a chord with not just the youth, but cineastes of all age-groups. Watch this celebration of love and get mesmerized!

If YJHD had released in 2001, a month after Dil Chahta Hai, it'd be no more unique than it is today. To paraphrase a critical thought in the film, "just because (I may) have a point, doesn't mean I'm right." You're going to watch YJHD if you haven't already . You're going to watch it for Ranbir dancing to the sprightly Badtameez Dil and you're going to watch it for Deepika in her cutesy glasses. Let's just say if your expectations are in check, you won't be disappointed.

On the whole, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has tremendous entertainment value because of its fine drama, enjoyable humour, great music, lovely star value and fantastic performances. It will have a meritorious run at the box-office and keep the exhibitors very happy. Business in the big cities will be outstanding while it will go on declining as the size of the city decreases. Similarly, business in the good multiplexes will be outstanding while it will be lesser in the lesser multiplexes and in the single-screen cinema.

Youth is a many splendoured thing. An alive, fresh vibe dominates Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jaawani Hai Deewani invigorating you through it's entire run. The story is not novel, but the treatment is A-grade. The first half of the film is a fun-ride. Watching Madhuri Dixit do a ghagra number with Ranbir is a ceeti-moment. At intermission point, the film rightly leaves you yearning for more. The first twenty minutes of the second half is mundane. But the action comes together again at Aditi's wedding.Note: You may not like this film if a typical, zany Bollywood masala flick is not what you go for.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a bright, breezy and brassy film designed for easy consumption. What it certainly is not is ballsy. For all the big ideas about life and the dilemmas of youth that it tosses up in the air over a runtime that’s 20 minutes shy of three hours, it always opts to play safe, vacillating between thoughts of rebellion and acts of conformity. It is the erratic narrative arc that is a letdown. Overlong, sluggish and fluffy, it meanders through varied locations as the young lovers/friends seek to reconnect with each other after a few years of being apart.

Mukerji has crafted a film about characters he clearly cares about and wants you to do the same, where even if the conclusion is a tad convenient, it’s the one you want to see. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is predictable but who cares? Romance is back with a bang and it is exuberant, entertaining, dazzling and worth your time.

When the songs aren’t playing, however, this is a daftly childish film, one where most actors act half their age and the narrative stumbles forward inanely and gracelessly. What should have been a breeze turns into a pained plod, and while things still look all glossy, the songless part of the movie -- the story, we dare say? -- remains dismally predictable and awfully contrived, eventually becoming quite a bore.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a been-here, seen-this, much-too-long glossy creature, and not much else. But the thing with the best rom-coms is how the oldest story in the world — boy meets girl, and they live happily ever after — gets a fresh telling. On that crucial test, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani scores low.

Director Ayan Mukerji’s second outing at the Box Office, after ‘Wake Up Sid’, is light, frothy at the primary level – and delves somewhat into the deeper recesses of human emotions at the secondary level. However, one thing emerges tall – ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ is an extremely pleasant watch. In a nutshell, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ is no heavy or preachy business. It is meant to be enjoyed and it does its job well. Apart from a few parts where the pace of the film drops badly, Ayan Mukherji’s handiwork is a breezy, enjoyable one. Three stars for this!

While Wake up Sid was more personal, YJHD seems like a chapter that will resonate with everyone. Deepika and Ranbir's tryst with romance, the denials and acceptance, frustration of not being able to live certain moments all over again, are just some of the emotions that are drawn out of every day scenarios. Mukherjee keeps it real. Between the dazzle of Manish Malhotra's sequins, slick production value, and a robust item song by Madhuri Dixit, lies a simple story of vulnerability, and fear of loss.

What’s Good: The film is appetizingly mushy in keeping a lavish doze of realism in it.What’s Bad: The film is built on a jaded idea that could have gone bad, but luckily doesn’t. Watch or Not?: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a delicious entertainer. Though the story is packed with its generous share of clichés, it still works endearingly! Deepika and Ranbir render on screen an irresistible chemistry. It is half way through the year and finally here is 2013′s first true to the word blockbuster film.

Even his love story – a demure girl-next-door who skips her heartbeat for the commitment-phobic boy – isn’t novel, but his leading cast makes it work.To Ayan’s credit, he does the unthinkable and makes the stereotypes work, rather convincingly, through stunning frames and killer tunes. While ‘YJHD’ is formulaic, and nothing exceptional in terms of story, Ayan’s narrative’s got style and flair, and he textures it gorgeously. For most parts, ‘YJHD’ isn’t damaging and does make a fun, frothy buddy flick. If anything, we expected Ayan to stay away from the unpredictable in the end, but that is where he falters. That aside, we’d propose you step out of your homes and allow Ranbir and Deepika to take you on a fun ride that you won’t regret.
