Chashme Baddoor  Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5  Review By:  Rajeev Masand  Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)
The new 'Chashme Baddoor' does no justice to the 1981 gem, but it's not unwatchable either. Still, the new 'Chashme Baddoor' doesn't entirely work because Dhawan appears conflicted between taking the characters on a journey of his making, and sticking to the blueprint of the original film. If you're willing to leave the memory of the earlier film at the door, there's a chance you might enjoy the rat-a-tat sparring between the leads, and you might even find yourself chuckling at some of the crude humour. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for David Dhawan's Chashme Baddoor. Like junk food, it has no nutritional value. But an occasional bite doesn't hurt.

Like I stated at the outset, this one's over the top, loud and very 'David Dhawanish', if one can use this terminology. But to give the credit where it's due, it's thoroughly engaging and entertaining. With CHASHME BADDOOR, David steps into the comfort zone yet again. There's no denying that the humour he injects in this one is not aimed at the purists, but the spectator of today, who may not be as complaining purely because of the laughs and entertainment it has to offer. On the whole, CHASHME BADDOOR encompasses the spirit of the original, but has been customised to entice the present-day spectators. An entertainer with dollops of humour and wild situations thrown in, this one's a laugh-riot that should not be missed!

Half an hour into the film, I was in danger of actually liking Chashme Baddoor. And that is how the film pans out soon after the spry beginning, leaving you wincing. Because Dhawan's film is a series of forced contrivances, not a story that grows out of a place and time. His characters don't feel like they are good friends who live together. They feel like they have just come together for the shot. Neither do they mesh well, nor do they work Individually as well as they should. Why remake a classic if you can't improve upon it? Truly bad-door.

The original film had a certain lightness of being. The remake is purposefully loud and inevitably, leaden. David and his writers, Renuka Kunzru and Farhad-Sajid, update it by making it in-your-face. There isn’t a subtle frame in this film and that includes the costume, the background music and of course the jokes. Chashme Baddoor delivers the occasional laugh but the level of the joke is someone slapping someone else or a tired Bollywood reference. If you can settle for that, check it out. I’m going with two stars.

David Dhawan’s Chashme Baddoor is a raggedy bag of gags as flimsy as the boxers that the three buddies strut around in – they are full of colour all right but add little value to the canvas. Intended to be a breezy comic romp, the film is woefully short of wind in its sails despite all the bluff and bluster that it whips up. As a matter of fact, Chashme Baddoor doesn’t deserve to be designated as a remake: it demolishes much more than it actually makes. Dhawan and his scriptwriter leave the core of the original storyline intact but tamper cavalierly with its essence. The result is anything but salutary. If the original was a soothing and timeless melody, this is a raucous and forgettable item number. Give it a shot if you must, but don’t expect the world from it.

There is enough color on screen to keep you engaged, but the same can’t be said about the punches and one liners in the script. While the shayari and gags work in the first half they wear out and become cumbersome as the film paces towards its interval. Dhawan uses more slaps than slapstick to show his funny side. The film has its moments when it plays on the chemistry between the three friends, but as soon as the screenplay gets into that attempt to look and sound cool, you feel repulsed. Dhawan’s ode to his own songs from the 90’s reminds us of those days when his films were effortless and unapologetic about their style. Sadly, Chasme Baddoor feels like a forced attempt to please its audience.

it must be added that the first half has several funny anecdotes which will be enjoyed by youngsters. However, there would be another section among the audience, who will find the comic drama a bit too loud. On the whole, Chashme Baddoor is a fair entertainer with appeal for the youth. It will keep the theatrical distributors smiling as the investment, in most cases, is reasonable.

- Bollywood is lazy, out of ideas and so darn cocky. So while filmmakers have no qualms about ripping or remaking verified hits, they cannot resist this urge to improvise and show their true calibre in the process. this Chashme Battering is an assault to the original with its line-up of gaudy aesthetics (think Rohit Shetty’s All The Best), actors hamming to the hilt in boxers and ghastly, GHASTLY writing. If the outcome of a remake is to affront everything the original represents then WHY ON EARTH call it Chashme Baddoor. Unnecessary is right. During one of the songs, I saw a board that reads, ‘Please don’t touch artefacts.’ I rest my case.

What’s Good: David Dhawan easily surpasses the standards he had set for himself by giving the 1981 classic Chashme Baddoor an unusually quirky and unthinkable comic dimension. What’s Bad: Despite coming of age, it is hard for Dhawan to miss out on his trademark slapstick genre of comedy which as usual gets a little unbearable at places. Watch or Not?: The Chashme Baddoor remake comes as a pleasantly surprising tale from the house of Dhawans, abundant in humor and not slapstick buffoonery. Rendering a modern angle to the classic story, the film interestingly tugs at our nostalgic beads, remaining innovative making this one of the most remarkable romantic comedies of recent times. Hit the theatres armed with coke and popcorn, you wouldn’t want to miss this one!

If Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval’s love story back in the 1980s could have gained the status of a cult, Ali Zafar and Taapsee Pannu’s is not very far behind on that ladder.David Dhawan’s version of ‘Chashme Baddoor’ sure takes inspiration from the original, but goes light on the serious parts of the first one. Here, tragedy is dealt with in a comical manner, moulding the film into a veritable laugh riot. Yet, Dhawan going easy on the slapstick, exaggerated comedy that he so enjoys portraying on celluloid comes as a huge boon for the senses, making the film utterly watchable. In Hindi cinema, there is a reason David Dhawan enjoys the epithet of the King of Comedy – and from the King’s treasure chest, the film is a gem. Three stars for the re-loaded ‘Chashme Baddoor’ – not to be missed, this one!

David Dhawan does the unexpected. He gives the original a menacingly, fun twist, something many, including me, wouldn’t have thought him capable of. While, it’s incomparable to the original, it still manages to hold its own, and packs in sufficient amount of quirkiness, madness and poetry to leave us sufficiently tickled. It also emerges as one of Dhawan’s more tolerable movies, with the director refusing to indulge in his staple, slapstick comedy drill and over-the-top drama. Dhawan has upped his standard, just enough to warrant a trip to the cinemas. It's definitely worth the extra helping of popcorn and coke.

This Chashme Baddoor moves wickedly at its own volition creating a crazy pattern of comic chaos that stops short of being anarchic due to the finely-tuned situational satire simulated in the writing out of a material that was created 30 years ago. Just when my faith in remakes had been shaken by Himmatwala last week, David Dhawan had me shaking with laughter this week.Carry on, Mr Dhawan. This is David Dhawan’s wickedest comedy of one-upmanship since Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. You can’t miss it. The attention-grabbing chest-thumping gibberish-spewing rowdy boyz won’t let you.

Chashme Baddoor  Movie Review in Hindi
