Gippi Movie Review

Despite its promising premise, evocative of the quirky American comedy Napoleon Dynamite, writer-director Sonam Nair's debut film hits rough patches because the writing is so derivative, few of the characters feel particularly original or interesting. The key tragedy with the film is that while some of Nair's ideas are progressive and strong, her execution seldom matches up.Ultimately, this could have been a sweet, unusual tale about the triumph of a nerd, yet it's let down by its affected tone. I'm going with two out of five for Gippi. Alas, many of the film's better ideas are lost in execution.

Frankly, Gippi's could be yours, mine, anybody's story. Many of us go through a phase that's between teens and adulthood. Films like GIPPI talk to every parent, every child since kids, generally, at that age, don't know how to deal with situations and challenges that life throws at them. The feeling of insecurity, anxiety, edginess that one experiences during those years is delightfully captured through the various kids in the film. On the whole, GIPPI is a credible take on the 'coming-of-age' variety of movies. This one's straight from the heart. Sweet, simple, emotionally engaging, heart-warming cinema!

Gippi is an amiable but predictable coming-of-age story of a 14-year-old girl. But the trouble is that Nair, who has also written the story, doesn’t go far enough. The milieu she creates is artificial and clichéd. Gippi’s many troubles are too neatly and easily resolved. There is no sting.Gippi is a strictly bubble-gum, sugar-coated version of adolescence. But I’m glad that someone put it out there. I’m going with two and a half stars. There is some sweetness to be savored here.

But here's the conundrum and the most interesting bit: the tweens and teens enthralled with SOTY are going to love Gippi too.They aren't going to care that the conflict took a while coming, before the slice-of-life film turned into a coming-of-age one. Will it matter to them that Hollywood has been playing with these cliches for a long time Doubt it. They won't care because there are too many moments of universal truths. They will have a lump in their throats when it's time. They might learn a life lesson or two. And they're going to cheer for the underdog. Because they will identify. Sonam Nair’s story about school girls and the travails of the growing-up years is quite frivolous. Even her screenplay is a little too childish. Frankly, the story and the screenplay look more suited for an episode of a television serial. Sonam Nair’s direction, limited as it is by her script, is ordinary. Her narrative style is such that the drama unfolding on the screen doesn’t ring true and fails to move or involve the viewer. On the whole, Gippi is a childish take on adolescence and will face an uphill task at the ticket windows.

Sonam Nair's 'coming of puberty' film handles simple issues sensitively, though it doesn't delve too deep. The subtlety appeals, but we wish there was more drama packed in the second half, with a better climax. Teenagers will probably find a slice of their life in Gippi, and adults might protest to such 14-somethings extreme indulgences in fashion, hot-bods and green-tea diets. The mom-daughter moments exude emotions and shed the typical broken-home baggage. Overall, a simple story that stays pre-pubescent and doesn't quite grow into the high-school of stories. Moral: Be yourself, love yourself - fat, frumpy or Gippi!

For all its attempts to look and feel different from the run-of-the-mill, Gippi is pretty obviously not the ultimate film about adolescence. But there is no denying that it is a warm-hearted film, if nothing else, with some nice touches that might strike an emotional chord. The crucial turning points in the plot are rather unimaginatively handled, often pushing an otherwise commendable effort into all-encompassing shallowness. Gippi is a feel-good drama and everything, even an overdose of clumsy preaching, is fair when the principal pursuit is happiness.

Director Sonam Nair’s Gippi will appeal to tweens and teens, but not as much to adults mainly due to the lack of a serious plot and any volume control whatsoever.If Gippi were compared to SOTY, I would say SOTY was better as it has a much more detailed plot and appeals to all ages. Most adults will find Gippi boring due to its partly cheesy, partly slapstick humour. As I said the movie is simple, but good. It has comedy, drama, romance and even a little heartbreak.If you’re a loud person like me, then I suggest you pick up some friends and go and watch Gippi in a theatre. Otherwise, buy the DVD later but you will miss some great surround sound! It really is a great movie and I think the 11-21 year olds will love it.

The trouble is not so much with the performers but with what they are asked to do in an idiom borrowed from American teen dramas. This comes off as a mini version of the Karan Johar-directed Student Of The Year, which was itself derivative.It's nice for Gippi to be saying what it does. That fat and frumpy is not bad. That it is quite all right to be who you are, and not anyone else. That winning is not everything. But it would have been nicer if it had been said in a newer, fresher way.

A lot of this is predictable, which takes out the fun from some really well executed scenes. So when Gippi falls off her chair as her class mates giggle and poke fun, or when she struggles to get into that school uniform we know where the film is heading. There is something innocent and vulnerable about Gippi that touches a chord, but it is the unnecessary mix and match of clichéd moments and mundane dialogues that prevents the film from rising above the ordinary.

What’s Good: A luscious candy floss film with its pink milieu that paints a heart warming storyline. What’s Bad: It is a cacophony of clichés that outcharms the film’s honesty. Watch or Not?: Gippi is an irresistibly penned fairy tale that has the only stilted flaw of working on clichés. For most part it is feel-good, except its dragging hackneyed bits that butcher the delightful impression that it manages. Clubbing adolescent antics along with the transformation of Gippi into a fashionista translates on screen some despicable stereotypes. The captivation penchant gives this film the confidence to follow into independent new-age genre of cinema. A steady, heart churning story with Riya Vij winning convincingly as the film’s most entrancing element makes it an exceedingly watchable film for teenagers.
